europeanbob
I am sending an application to South Yorks police applying for a certificate, however, intend to keep the gun at my home address which is an aprtment close to Sheffield City Centre. The area is quite lowly populated at the moment but could be classed as a 'bad area'. Would this go against me in my application even though I intend to keep it in a locked cabined etc.? Ian E
Iam no expert, but i've gone thru the process of getting a gun cabinet applying for my certificate ( come on merseyside it's been a month now and you haven't even cashed the cheque !! ), so I've done a fair bit of googlin and reading up, as long as the guns are secure in a cabinet and your house is secure, and you meet the terms of the certificate theres no reason they should refuse, they may ask you to take extra sercuity meassure such as getting an alarm fitting to the house etc.. Yorkshire seem pretty quick for SGC so get your app in and order your cab ready for the visit and ask the FAO exactly were he wants it, it will mean another visit to approve it, but if your very worried it maybe the right way to go about it, personaly i've stuck my up in the loft as it's the only bit of soild wall in the house, so it's into the fabric of the house and also into the loft beams. on a person note if it's a bad area when you do get your SGC don't take your guns out in a gun slip, i reckon it's just asking for trouble, break it downa nd take it to the car in a carboard box or something, no1's gonna notice you do that, a gun slip every scally in teh areas gonna know you have guns in the house. europeanbob
Thanks for that, the gun I'm hoping to get is currently locked secure at my uncles and Derbyshire police are satisfied with the cabinet. Obviously I'd therefore be taking the gun and cabinet at the same time. Would the police want see a cabinet installed prior to granting of the certificate? ps Great idea about transporting the gun in a box. Munst
on a person note if it's a bad area when you do get your SGC don't take your guns out in a gun slip, i reckon it's just asking for trouble, break it down and take it to the car in a cardboard box or something, no1's gonna notice you do that, a gun slip every scally in teh areas gonna know you have guns in the house. Good bit of a advice there mate Bob - you might need to look at windows locks etc if your FEO thinks you need them, or better door locks if your in a 'bad area' but then again its down to the FEO. And yeah they will want to see/hang off/beat the **** out of your cabinet before granting the certificate. Oh and Ian - If its been a month and they haven't cashed your cheque then I'd give them a ring mate, it should be the first thing they do when they receive the application so it may or been lost etc. And even if it hasn't its always good to know eh! Ian E
I think I will Munst, I know they have had it as I rang to double check, and also had one letter off them, I think I will give it till next week and ring em, I have been told that merseyside take 3 months... And yes Bob, DON'T move that gun till you have your SGC and the cabinet is fully in place and aprroved, you ahve your uncle will get nicked for it. don't be afreid of ringing the local Firearms, from my own dealings and from what I've read on here there a smashing bunch of chaps.. Would this go against me in my application even though I intend to keep it in a locked cabined etc.? my local feo is really great. if i was you i would phone your feo and see what he says, he may give you some pointers like window locks etc that way you'll be upto speed before you put your application in. he may even come round and have a chat. if he's anything like my feo then he'll be very helpfull. good luck and i hope all goes well. remember just because you live in a 'bad area' doesn't mean you can't have a sgc my friend lives in a town that has a stupidly high crime rate apparrently it was 3rd in the country for crime per capita (i don't know how true that is but that what i was told when studying geography) and he's got his sgc. lister1

I think Napier do a gun slip for broken guns, not cheap but worth the money if it means you can take your gun in and out without any attention. Nial.
