STICK!!!

After getting my antler through from fo5ter (great to deal with) I have amounted the courage to begin making my stick.

Unfourtunatly I have a far from straight piece of what I belive to be hazel that is a fair bit narrower than the antler.

My answer was to cut and shape a block from old lumps of oak ( flooring offcuts ) to span the gap smoothly. As you can see I have glue two bits with reasonably interesting grain together and the large screw coming out is going to be the tang down into the stick.

At the moment I am banking on the school letting my use the belt sander otherwise I will be in with a lot of hand filing.

Will let you all know how it goes, or if it goes at all? :good:

Pictures just illustrate the block idea and the nice piece of antler from fo5ter.

May seem insignificant to you lot, but I have finally done it. After weeks of filing and sanding its finished!!!!!

Set the tang in epoxy resin and used beeswax to bring out the grain in the oak spacers. Made a few uck fups when shaping the spacers but after a serious amount of time with the files and 100 grade sandpaper I got the shape and look how I wanted it.

Not bad for my first go I think!!!! :bye2::D

All I need to do now is put a finish on the antler so if anyone has suggestions on how I can go about this please please please tell me!! :(

Just finished a priest from an offcut of the stick. I drilled out about a third of it with a spade bit and filled the hole with 3oz of #7 lead. packed it in and pluged the end with a piece of oak made for the hole (again flooring offcuts).

Not as neat as I would have hoped, but for a first atempt I'm pretty chuffed.

You sound exactly like my Dad when I showed him your home brew topic and announced that I had found a use for the large glass cider flagon I liberated from my Gran's house 2 weeks ago.
