Blunderbuss
Right - I've got a gun! Now........ Decoys, bouncers, flappers, magnets, angels, cradles, lofting poles, hides!!!!! Ahhhhhhhhhhhgh!!!!!!!! How much of this is essential to start with? I'm thinking a net and hide poles, 10 flocked shells and a 5 full bodies. Am I on the right track? Will this be enough to be going on with for a newbie?
steve_b_wales
Yes. Decoys, hide poles and net should be your starter. Build up your kit as you go along. Bouncers are a good buy.
Thumpersniper
I am the same, have recently bought a gun, carts, and have plenty of land to go at, so will watch your thread Blunderbuss for some advice on what you can pick up or make cheaply that will give me a better time shooting! so far i have been lamping with an air rifle a lot, or walked around and had chance shots, have only used a dead rabbit to attract some crows and maggies, never decoys. Cheers

Blunderbuss
what gun did you get mate? I bought a second hand Beretta Silver Pigeon 12G multi choke with 28" barrels. Which leads onto another question - which chokes should I put in it for decoying? I'm thinking fairly open chokes - is that right? Nice gun mate, i asked the same question when i started out with my gun not so long ago, and was told either 1/2 choke or 1/4 choke, but somebody said something that made alot of sense, if using 1/2 choke and you missed, you might well have got the bird with 1/4 choke. But i am doing quite rubbish at the moment and looked to put 1/4 choke instead of 1/2 that i am using, and i haven't got 1/4 ...but they do say you should get competent with the gun and stick with one choke. so it's 1/2 choke for me the more choke you use the tighter the shot pattern Click here to have a look Edited March 28, 2009 by evilstoat

Whereabouts in Gloucs are you? Are you seeing many pigeons?
evilstoat
I'm from Ciren, quite a few pigeons about latley, but it's a learning curve compared to rifle shooting what i'm used to, and i'm not that good at the moment, was clay shooting on one of my permissions last couple of weeks to get my eye in a bit, just waiting for the bunnies to appear, i prefer rabbit shooting to pigeons

I've done a lot more rifle shooting in the past and am better with a rifle than a shotgun, but do want to try to master it.
Greenhunter
Improved cylinder/1/4 choke = same thing. that's what I use for everything Clays, pigeons, duck ..... I've dropped 60yd crows with 30grm 6's through a 27" barrel! Don't get to wrapped up with choke, it'll do your head in, trust
Taff Mason
hi mate, all good advice so far i reckon. when i started out i bought 10 decoys, i got sillosocks but any kind will do, 4 wilkinsons line poles for hide poles which i still use now and some millitary cam net. as for chokes i wouldn't really worry too much, i've never changed mine, couldn't even tell you what ones i've got in but i think they're 1/4 and 1/2. you'll need a seat but make sure its not too low because your legs will be in agony after a long days shooting if it is. and of course you'll need some way of carrying all your gear across the fields. anything else you can buy little by little as you go. i'll send you a PM ref some cam net now. just out of curiosity evil stoat where about in Ciren do you shoot? i may have some permission there soon i'll hopfully get confirmation next week. the farmers not having much trouble at all with the pigeons at the moment though, Taff
