I am soon to finish my pigeon magnet an just wonted some tips on how to use it.

 

How far from the hide should you put the magnet?

 

What speed to set the magnet at?

 

How long should the arms be?

 

Do you use the normal patterns with it?

Gibbon,

 

Start speaking the Queens English Matey, and perhaps you will get some useful advice - I can't understand all of your questions, but for starters:

 

* The magnet needs to be at the back of your pattern - ideally you want the birds to be crossing you about 20 - 30 yards out as they approach your decoys.

 

* I find that a fast spin speed is better than a slow one - no doubt others will disagree - but having seen Jim Allbone's magnets working and seen him bring down over 600 birds over three guns on one swathed rape field in a day, I know that it worked for him.

 

* The longer the arm length, the faster the bird will rotate - simple physics..??

 

* It doesn't matter how many gizmo's you have in your bag, the most important thing is to be at the right place on the field , at the right time - the best way to work this out is to recce the field the day before to find out exactly where the birds are feeding / flighting in, and if somebody has beaten you to it , forget shooting that field on that day, beacause, generally speaking, the birds will be spooked and will not decoy well, so instead brush up on your English and Grammar, and shoot a few clays to stay in touch.

Ok thank you for the tips. And I am very sorry for the spelling and grammar, I still have a week or two at school before I leave for good so I will brush up on my English skills your Royal Highness :D

Double H, your comment about "the longer the arm the faster the bird will rotate" has made me think :lol:

 

Will the bird rotate any faster if the arm was 10 meters long rather than 1 meter? I spose the longer the arm the more natual it looks. To look at the magnet from a distance, the shorter the arm will make the pigeon look like it's going faster, and the longer the arm will make the pigeon look as if it's going slower.

 

Think i might look into how long i can extend the arms within limits of stability and battery power.

The pigeon on the end of the arm will travel faster for the same rotational speed with a longer arm. Assume the individual arm is 5 feet long, giving an effective diameter of 10 feet and rotational speed is 60, r.p.m. the pigeon will travel at: 10 x 3.1417 x 60 feet per minute, so that's 1,885.02 feet per minute which is around 21mph

 

Assuming the arm is now (hypothetically) 10 feet long: 20 x 3.1417 x 60 gives a speed of 3,776.52 feet per minute which is around 42mph (twice the speed as you might expect.

 

Simple calculation using formula for circumference of circle and time/distance conversions.

I think what i was thinking was,

 

The longer the arm, the better it flys,

 

Short arm, lots of little circles

Long arm, large swooping circles and as explained, you'll have to slow down the magnet speed.

This is interesting Material to read indeed, I would have thought the question should be, at what speed would a pigeon "stall"? As I see it, if a pigeon is about six feet from ground, it must be dropping in for a landing and therefore is actually slower than "stall".

In this part of the world a big flock of woodies will sometimes all drop like stones onto a decoy pattern set out by somebody who knows what they're doing - they fold their wings right in and down they come - i've yet to see a bird "stall" in flight by travelling too slowly - they only do that when they've been zapped by 32gm of No 6 shot...!!!

 

Getting back to your point, i do believe that some "whirly's" have arms that are too short, I have personally found that the longer armed versions with a faster spin speed pull more birds than ther shorter armed ones - no doubt others will disagree...:beer:??

There is no need for you to say you are sorry to anyone regarding your spelling, your questions are quite clear.

I just hope we are not going to pull people up everytime there is a spelling mistake.
