First time out in two months

After two months lay off due to decorating the house and keeping wifey happy, I am due to go out on Bank holiday Monday, and I can't wait

It's up to my friends shoot (120 mile round trip) which consists of 350 acres of winter barley and rape, probably a fair few inches tall by now I'm guessing.

I will be taking plenty of deeks, bouncers and the magnet and hope to settle down on a decent patch of rape. Even though I hope we get a decent day, just being out again and to take even a few shots will be nice as I've missed it so much. I've been reading the forum and anything I could get my hands on the last couple of months and I can't wait to get out there and try some new techniques and patterns.

Now I'm back on the scene, I will start knocking on the doors again looking for my own first permision and hopefully closer than my mates.

Wish me luck guys, and I will let you know how I get on. If it's decent maybe some pictures too.

Happy bank holiday shooting to you all  :good::D

Just clled the farmer to tell him we are going down there and he said that the woodies have destroyed all of the rape fields !! He has left one rape field which is the best of a bad bunch and is sewing sugar beet on the rest as I write this.

Being that he is drilling now, what would we expect on Monday, will they be hitting the fresh drill or the rape?

I have read plenty on rape but haven't got a clue what shooting sugar beet is like, or whether or not woodies like this???

Any advice appreciated!

Cosd,

Forget the sugar beet, I don't think the woodies are into that, but take my advice and don't be in too much of a hurry to get set up, you've got plenty of time to get a decent bag on the rape, provided you watch where the birds are dropping in, and get set up there.

It's usually a corner of a field that's already been well chewn off, but do take your time to find the right spot.

So, no excuses now, take plenty of shells and show us the piccies of your 100+ day. :good:

shame you could not have got out there, befor they did all the damage.

Yeah it's bad news really!. I had no choice as I couldn't get out at all, I've just been too busy. My two friends have been down there a few times, but the birds were in big numbers, one shot and they were gone for the day. I don't think they had a dozen birds between them the last 5 or 6 outings!

We're going tomorrow now instead of Monday, I'll watch the fields for a while and hopefully find a decent spot on the rape as suggested by the good man Catamong.

I'll let you know how we get on.
