Highlander
Given that our land here has been like concrete all summer those poles wouldn't have lasted 5 minutes. I have resorted to the use of a slide hammer just to get stuff in the ground!

These have some serious heavy duty spikes on them

smiiithy
Thinking about giving these a go. Not a particularly handy individual when it comes to DIY or the likes though
smiiithy
I've been and bought myself 4 washing line poles at £2.99 each and got 4 sturdy looking shelf brackets at £1.49 each from Wilko's. Now where might I find some ground spikes?
Blunderbuss
Aluminium angle cut to a point with a hacksaw, tidied up with a bench grinder and file Good luck, we need piccies

stubby
wont ali angle bend in hard ground
smiiithy
My Dad is trying to source me some steel angle of similar size at the moment and looking at B&Q similar size of steel angle is £4.92 and the ali is £4.69. 1m will be enough for the 4 poles making the spikes £1.23 each. Washing line pole: £2.99 Decent shelf bracket: £1.49 (Wilko's do them for 40-odd p but these are much more sturdy looking) 25cm steel ground spike: £1.23 Grdinging, welding and a splash of green paint: FOC Grand total: £5.71 per hide pole So the very most I could be paying for 4 twist lock, 4ft to 8ft extendible hide poles with kick plates and steel spikes is £22.84 (or £16.88 if my Dad find's some steel angle) instead of £45 for shop bought ones Edited November 24, 2009 by smiiithy
George1990
I am the king of penny pinching. I shall beat be your score of £5.71 - just you wait
smiiithy
I want to see quality mind George! Anybody can get washing line poles from the pound shop and some 46p shelf brackets with a tent peg gaffa taped to the bottom but it will never compare to my Dad's 30-odd years as a welder  Just wait until you see the 12 decoys I bought for a tenner which my design student girlfriend has been tasked with painting  I am the king of penny pinching. I shall beat be your score of £5.71 - just you wait
stubby
ok, Ive succumbed to the idea, and just bought 5 poles from wilkinsons at £15, at that price, its worth trying, compared to £55 for purpose made ones, luckerly I have 5 angle iron brackets in the garage, that with a bit of angle grinding, will make the spike and foot plate in one I'll get some pics up once I get into the "blue peter" frame of mind
gyp
Are these any good? https://www.macbuildingproducts.com/product...products_id=
smiiithy
You could easily sell these for £30+P&P for 4 if you made a good job and use decent materials
smiiithy
 I'll stick with the extendible ones  If your going to just put a stick in the ground might as well use a stick of bamboo, but I figure £17 - £23 for a good set of poles that will last me for years works out as reasonable value Are these any good? https://www.macbuildingproducts.com/product...products_id=
christy
As I bought some camo net on here a few days ago guess I had best join in. Like the look of the spikes and bracket jobbies. I shall get me poles n stuff and knock one up over the weekend. Cheers for the idea. Can't wait to see wife and kids faces when they see it. They think I'm barmy at the best of times
stubby
Are these any good? https://www.macbuildingproducts.com/product...products_id=247 they weigh a tonne, used on roadworks for keeping 1mtr netting up,
smiiithy
How is everyone getting on with the washing-line hide poles? I still haven't started as I don't have the spikes sorted yet Edited November 30, 2009 by smiiithy
stubby
ok, well after the computer went up the swanney last week, gave me some free time to give it a go, total cost was £45 thats £15 for the wilkinsons poles £27 camo netting £3 can of spray everything else was sourced from the garage/junk 5 heavy duty angle iron shelf brackets cut down to become the footplate and spike, I was going to just bolt them to the poles, but then started thinking that when lugging them around they could be a bit dangerous, whack you in the head etc, so decieded I wanted them to be detachable having read the book "the pigeon shooter" by John Batley I liked his design on hide, but that meant a fair bit of netting, so although a lot of people dont like ex army netting, I went for this as its CHEAP a 4.5mtr square, cut in half and re joined gives me 9mtrs x 2mtrs plus the join is at the back, giving me an access point anyway, heres a few pictures of the finished hide http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y29/eastl...26112009328.jpg http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y29/eastl...26112009331.jpg http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y29/eastl...01122009337.jpg http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y29/eastl...26112009332.jpg http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y29/eastl...26112009334.jpg http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y29/eastl...01122009340.jpg
