Police at the shooting ground

So, I've just finished shooting and am walking the dog up near the stands to get him a bit more used to the sound of shotguns going off. He's happy putting his head in the rabbit holes and, after about ten minutes, I'm heading back up to the club house to get a cuppa.

Funny thing though, I notice a police car in the car park as I'm walking back and, as I get Ted squared away in the back of the motor, a young copper (they all seem young to me now) comes up to me and asks if people have finished shooting for the day. I offer to take him to the club house and ask what's up, only to find out that a member of the public has phoned in to say that they have been walking their dog in the woods at the back of the field and had been hit by a clay.

Now, that's ******** for a start, as the woods are 500m from the nearest stand, and the wind is blowing the clays away from the woods anyway. Christ, even the max load of the biggest shot the club allows won't reach that far. I tell him that too, quoting the wind and the standard "300m with no. 6 shot" range that seems to be standard.

But, I digress... The chap's had a report, he's got to look into it and so he gets taken to the only stand facing the woods with a going away bird (which drops after about 25m in any case) by the lass that runs front of house. After seeing that, he's pretty much made up his mind that the person walking their dog is talking carp, and I think they will have a bit of a talking to by him about wasting police time.

It really does seem as though someone has got it in for the owners though. Given that they run a good, friendly shoot, it's not really fair. Does anyone else have this problem?

It seems that even when people clay shoot-there are a minority of stirrers who want to cause trouble. The Police want to start clamping down on people like this who maliciously lie to cause trouble and start fining them at the very least. They should work out how much the rozzers time costs, add fuel and maintenance for vehicle then hand the moron a ticket.Perhaps this might stop them if they know its gonna cost them money.

This would have nothing to do with the police in any event, unless the walker was alleging that someone deliberately tried to hit them with the clay!

By the sounds of it the woods are so far away that shot, and certainly a clay could not possibly have go that far.

However, had someone called the environmental health people and they had come out, who knows what would have happened next! There are plenty of shoots around the UK that are getting agro from the neighbours and some have shut. There was a longish thread on this no so long ago I remember.

The police will not shut you down unless there is something illegal going on. The environmental health though is another matter...complaints about noise and nuisance can cause the shoot endless problems.
