sid the sniper
Is there a lot of choice of .22 hornet rifles, i cant seem to find any rifles chambered in this caliber - or is it just me?
M ROBSON
Look out for a CZ 527 hornet, very accurate gun and cheap too. Mark.
casts_by_fly
you've got the CZ and Ruger that pop to the top of my head. Savage made the model 40 hornet, but I think they dropped it for the model 25 now, though neither would really be seen over here. The Encore and Contender are both offered in 2 hornet, or at the very least you can order them in hornet. Again, neither are common over here. Browning makes the a-bolt micro and is regarded highly, but I haven't handled one. There aren't many hornet based actions. I looked when I wanted my 17 hornet. I have an encore, so that was an easy choice. Thanks Rick
M ROBSON
I'm not sure but doesn't the Sako Quad come with a Hornet option?? Mark.
M ROBSON
Forget my last post!!! Having thought about it this obviously wouldn't be possible with a rimfire action. Mark.

casts_by_fly
Forget my last post!!! Having thought about it this obviously wouldn't be possible with a rimfire action. Mark. Its not as far fetched as you think. The Ruger 77/22 hornet is essentially the same action as the 77/22. The Savage model 40 was a slightly beefier model of their r93. I would wager it is more than possible to design an action based on the hornet, and have it usable for the rimfires (with either a change in bolt/bolthead, or an offset barrel). dieseldogg
Sticking my neck out here But Tompson contender? is that the right name Do a model that with a switch on the hammer spur can fire either rim fire or centre fire with a change of barrel. A solution in search of a problem perhaps
Baldrick
Yep, the Thompson Contender might be worth considering: http://www.tcarms.com/firearms/g2Contender.php IIRC, there's at least one PW member using a Contender.
Guest RemmySPS
Its not as far fetched as you think. The Ruger 77/22 hornet is essentially the same action as the 77/22. YUP! This is why the Ruger needs a bit of tinkering to get it to shoot well. The bolt is in two halves and you can get a little bit of longitudinal play when the bolt is closed on the round. I had to shim the two halves with a 4thou’ shim to prevent differing head-space problems. The trigger is **** as well. I have two Hornets, the Ruger and an old BSA, which is a beautiful rifle but the barrel is shot out. Asked Norman Clarke for an estimate to fix it and he quoted £750 That’s somewhere around 10X more than the rifle cost when it was new back in the early 60s Edited May 20, 2009 by RemmySPS
casts_by_fly
Yep, the Thompson Contender might be worth considering: http://www.tcarms.com/firearms/g2Contender.php IIRC, there's at least one PW member using a Contender. Who has a contender on here? I didn't think any were imported because they are for the lighter cartridges (223 sized with high pressure, 30-30 with lower pressure) and generally intended to be shot as pistols. I have an encore (capable for the heavy magnums) and I still don't know of too many of them in the country. That's why I didn't suggest them above as realistic options. That said, I love my encore. Thanks, Rick
Baldrick
Rick, my recollection could indeed be you and your Encore, not another member with a Contender.
