Paul in North Lincs.
I know that the vast majority of you ferreting men will have hung up your nets long before now, as would I normally. I been asked to carry on one particular farm as they are infested. The trouble is my Hob seems to have gone into 'super Kill mode', and is nailling Rabbits underground, within seconds of being entered. This is now resulting in me having to digg for every one, and on occasions he is killing and moving off straight away, emerging covered in claret. He worked well throughout the colder months, but I cant understand why he's donig this. He is not hungry when we go out. Just wondered if anyone else has come across this problem, and may know whats turned him into a savage!! Paul in North Lincs Edited April 7, 2005 by Paul in North Lincs. matt101
maybe the hormones in him from the breeding season has made him extra agressive??? r maybe hes just getting more experienced at his job matt
Cranfield
If the does are carrying , or feeding kits, they will be slower and more inclined to bury their heads and not bolt. He will definitely be finding nests of kits. Buck rabbits also tend to be more aggressive at this time of year and will fight back. All of these scenarios will result in your ferret killing rabbits and kits and then laying up. If I had to control rabbits at this time of year, I would use snares first, then long nets and finally an air rifle, or shotgun. Don't ruin a good ferret with too many kills.
