throdgrain
... but just to put my mind at rest please. Am I right in saying that the more rib you see, the higher the gun will shoot? Or is that just ********? I had a bad morning with clays today. With my new(er) gun, I scored 25/50 at my local shoot, where I'd normally be dissapointed not to get at least 40. Oh and 14 at skeet I had to try another round of sporting, on the first stand I scored 2 out of 10. Now this was an odd unusual pair of clays (ask Bigweed on here!) but I would normally have got half of them I would have thought. Then I got to the next stand, one I'm used to, and missed the first pair alltogether. Something made me think, and I decided the gun was shooting high. I lowered where I was "aiming" the gun, and hit all the rest but one. Carried on in the same vein and hit 20/20 on the next two stands. Last stand was fast simo pairs, bit of a pain with a pump action , but I hit half of them I think. Point is, this has pretty much proved to me that I was right and the gun is shooting high. To be honest I've had the problem with my other guns (it's what made me think of it) and I've adjusted the p.o.a with shims etc that come with both the Mossberg and the Benelli. However this other gun, the Remington, doesnt have any shims. In short, I wonder if altering my head to see less rib might alter the p.o.a ? I think it will, but would be grateful for any further ideas. Getting the gun professionally fitted is an idea obviously, but not normal on a 33 year old 870 pump action

throdgrain
You had to go and say that
Peter De La Mare
Yes. If you see more than 1/4" of rib, then you're shooting a trap gun, probably. If you have a centre bead and you can see the end bead sitting on top of it forming a figure 8, then that's perfect.
throdgrain
Yes so on any gun, if the middle bead makes a figure of 8 with the front bead, then it should be perfect. But it doesnt seem to be on this gun I may refit the middle bead (I took it off, I'm not a fan) and try it again like that. Thing is, I hit stuff quite well normally with my Benelli, but I'm a bit bored with it to be honest. This is how we make life difficult for ourselves ... foggy11
The old £1 test is pretty good tell tale..... Place a £1 coin approximately 6 inches down the rib.....mount and you should be just able to see the end bead above it.... Nik....
throdgrain
I think the answer is to get it fitted. I'm sure whoever I find to do it will be a bit suprised working on an 870 instead of a Kreighoff, but hey. It'd frustrating, i've put a lot of effort into this gun, but I cant change the way I shoot, or it will mean I can't shoot my other guns ... throdgrain
Six inches from the breech end is how I remember it.
throdgrain
Well, yesterday was a Bad Day. I havent shot that badly in years, I couldnt understand it. Mostly when I miss I at least know why I missed, but yesterday not a clue. Anyway, I've considered it furiously all yesterday afternoon, and slept on it, in a drunken Bank Holiday Sunday kind of way, and this morning I know what went wrong. Foggy11 on here reminded me. I did the pound coin test, and as I'd suspected, the gun was shooting high because my head position was wrong, I was seeing FAR too much rib, consequently the gun was pointing UP. I've sorted this by refitting the middle bead, which will keep my head in the proper position. I suspect I see a bit too much rib on all my guns actually. I think this because I'm well known among my mates for shooting 20 or so in a round of skeet, whilst missing the first clay and the two really easy low birds on the last house. Why? Because they are gonig upwards but right in front of me. I'm shooting over the bird, or say ahead of a driven bird coming over my head. However, problem is now fixed, yesterday I'll put down to a temporary blip. Onwards and upwards
