kipper
What is the best (legal) caliber rifle you can shoot Roe Deer with, there will probably be a good chance of picking up permission for muntjack Deer as well. The rifle would be used for fox controll too. Your thoughts / advice will be appreciated Kipper.
PAULT
243 light bullets for fox. heavier bullets for deer
flytie
I applied for, and got, a 6.5x55 for foxing and deer. It's a great calibre. The FEO's are unlikely to let you have anything larger than 6.5 for fox control if it is your first centrefire rifle. My argument that a safe shot with a 6.5 was a safe shot with a .270 or a .308 did not impress them, however illogical that may be. This effectively limits your choice to .243, .260 and 6.5x55 unless you reload. Atb, ft
CharlieT
If you are foxing you want as flat a shooting round as you can get. I find that I just do not have time to rangefind and mess about, I just want a rifle where I can point and shoot. Therefore, bearing this in mind I would suggest a .243 fits the bill. In my view a 6.5x55 is not flat enough out to extended ranges to be a point and shoot caliber. If you fancy something different to a .243 consider a .260 instead of the Sweed, it's much flatter. I write this as someone who uses a 6.5 for deer and loves it but in my view it's no foxing gun, for that job I grab the .204 or 22.250 (or 243 if I still had it !!). Baldrick
It has to be .243 Win if you are limited to factory ammunition. However if you're planning to handload, I'd look at a .243 Ackley or a 6mmBR.

Try this link, http://www.guntrader.co.uk/GunsForSale/ There are 356 x .243's for sale, which should give you some idea. Atb. ft PS Spend as much, or more, on your scope than on the rifle is sound advice. Edited May 5, 2009 by flytie
Lloyd90
I myself am picking up my first CF soon. A 243 rifle I decided to go new as was worried for my first time buy incase anything was wrong and I got a dud Picking up a new Tikka for £590 (hopefully get it for 500). thats the old price so expect to shop around if you can find one at that. If not you can still pick up a HOWA or a CZ for around that money:) Mod is around £200-250 Scope depends on what you want to spend A decent quality scope can be anything from £400-1000. Lets say £400 for the sake of it. Add on anythign extra you want to spend. Your looking at £1100 Will get my rifle soon but it looks like it might be scopeless for a while :( lol
njc110381
I went for a 6.5x55 because I knew I'd be shooting bigger Deer. Just Fox and Roe/Munties a .243 would be fine. Flatter shooting for the Fox than the 6.
