new rifle winchester mod 70 1st trip out

Recommended Posts

I reacently bought a mod 70 Winchester .243 and my stepfather took me out stalking for the first time with my own rifle.

We spotted some deer about 100 yards got in position, it was all feeling good let the shot fly.

The deer heard the shot and ran off to the right over clear fell and disappeared out of site down some of the long trenches on the fell.

I was accompanied by my step father who is a very experienced stalker and he said that it was not hit.

I wanted to make sure I had not hit it and looked over the clear fell no blood, no pins and was satisfied that I had in fact I missed it.

It knocked my confidence a bit the last thing I wanted was to possibly injure a beast.

I was doing a little practice on the permission where I zero the rifle and thought that the trigger could do with some attention as I felt almost that I had trigger freeze and the trigger did feel a little clunky.

Took my rifle in to the gun smiths yesterday to get the trigger adjusted.

The gunsmith measured the trigger pressure, well it went off the scale over 7lbs.

He did say that Winchester have one of the best mass produced triggers on the market, but they set them like that due to litigation.

I got it back today and it is now 2lbs took it back to zero it and my god what a difference it's light and very crisp.

I zeroed it in at 25 yards bang in the centre of the bull moved off to 100 and splat right in the box 1 inch above the target, what a buzz, perfect!

Back up the road to Scotland on the weekend to see if I can christen the rifle.

I have the new mod 70 aswell but the shop adjusted mine prior to me picking it up.It was the same, the trigger was over 7lb and they got it down to 2lb and it feels like a custom trigger,no creep or travel just a snap. The groups are getting tighter and tighter the more i use it aswell,so i am well pleased.

Good luck on the stalking :good:

Had my model 70 adjusted before that you would have stood more chance hitting it by throwing the rifle. Came back can how hit a group size of just more an inch with about two pound pull.

Also changed the stock to hougue over moulded full length allie bed jobbies. Still gruops around the inch or just under but alot better to shoot, not as much felt recoil. And it is in 270 so its make difference.

Now a very good rifle.

Best of luck with the stalking.

Dave.

dont worry about missing a deer clean . As it was your first stalk i bet you any thing you like it was a bit of buck fever , i still suffer from it from time to time . You wont have your confidence untill you have made your first clean kill . Remember the thrill is in the stalk not in the kill .

Best wishes ,harnser .
