Blackbart
A dog is not really needed for rifle shooting, unless you are looking to do a lot of deer stalking, then a dog to follow up may come in handy. If it is for rough shooting and walked up then a spaniel. If it is driven or waterfowling then a lab. This is just broadly speaking as both will do either to some extent. Have a search on here as there has been lots of questions asked on this topic.
eshielsgundogs
If its your first dog to train, you might be better of with a Lab as the training is more black and white, than you would get with a spaniel. But like the last poster said it all depends on excatly what you want the dog to do, although most breeds can do both, but don't expect a lab to hunt like a spaniel. markbivvy
I wanted a terrier to go out with me and the rifle, ended up with a spaniel Ollie. 7 months old when i got him and he had never seen a thing, turns out it was the best thing i did. I dont shoot game, mostly foxes and rabbits odd days on pigeons,he does exactly what i want him too. And does it well.

Ian you may want to get a bitch if its your first dog, she will be a bit easier to train. mikee
