gun up gun down

Recommended Posts

If you normally shoot gun down, you may as well do the same on the clays. Occasionally you may encounter clays that don't give you sufficient time to mount the gun, so it might be an idea to try a bit of gun up as well, but if you're comfortable gun up, then carry on.

Some mincing tarts will try and tell you that shooting gun up is gay or somesuch tripe and they try and say that when they're out shooting sparrows, they can't stand there all day with gun up. What they don't seem to grasp is that most people don't give a rats harris what they do when they're shooting sparrows. Shooting clays is a competitive sport, shooting game isn't. If shooting gun up at clays increases your score, then it's the way to go

Enjoy the sport, it gets rather addictive

Sound advice there

Apart from DTL, I always go gun down since shooting Olympic skeet, and I much prefer it that way. I don't shoot clays competetively now, so if I drop a shot or two I'm not that concerned.

But I did get some fantastic guidance from Richard Baker and Andy Austin and Co, who only really shoot gun down Olympic skeet, and that helped massively.

I honestly believe that mounting the gun really quickly from below the hip has given me an edge, particularly when it's windy and the pigeons scream in over hedgerows, and when walking up hedgerows and all you see is a flash of a bunnies tail between crops.

Having said that though, I'm definitely in a minority. Most shoot with the gun mounted or with the stock a couple of inches below the cheek.

Absolutely, shoot whichever way is going to improve your scores, but if you need any persuading then shooting gun up is for raving homsexuals.

I always shoot gun down, just seems better that way. If there is a target that is too fast to complete the mount in the normal way I start mounting just before calling for the target so still go through the motions but get a bit of a head start.

Until I beat Mung, then I'll withhold my usual 'Gun up is for benders' line.... :good:

Blimey Pete,

Get your act together, it ain't that hard to beat him. Admittedly he has probably beaten me more than I have outshot him but it can be done.
