Tough birds...

Recommended Posts

I have made some Biltong from a single goose breast that I assessed to be an old one, and whilst carving/eating I found 3 shot, all lead(I shoot in Scotland), 2 were small No 3 or 4`s (the size me and my pal use) and the other huge, either US 2 or UK BB (.15+).

This bird was smaller and bill/feet were lighter in colour than almost any I have shot so was kept for casserole etc.

I don`t know whether this was a bird that had carried shot for a year or more, it was in good condition, or had been shot at recently and not killed. It was shot over deeks and neither I nor my pal use anything larger than 3`s unless we have birds skirting the pattern and can load 1`s.

My thoughts are that this was either a tough beast or it was a long shot, I remember in books/magazines that other geese have been found with other large lettered shot in it than the sizes they were shot with........ anyone else found this ??

I've found a musket ball (mould line around it) under the skin of a mallard I shot some yeras back. Guess it must have come from a punt gun or a ghost shooter! :hmm: Duck was fine...'til I shot it.

Also took a 303 bullet out of the hind quarter of a Scottish Roe I shot. The wound was well healed and the bullet resting against the bone so I guess it had been in the beast a while. Some poacher with an illegal rifle no doubt.
