reddan
Hi, I have been thinking of having a go at a comp for the first time. I have only shot at the local field based shoot which is very casual. Not looking for any pressure and will probably do bad so dont want to enter the Open or anything. Anyone know of a shoot nearish Norfolk, for reasonable money that I can go and just see how I do? Also, Can I even enter I have CPSA membership but only clubman? Also, Can I even enter I have CPSA membership but only clubman? Dan This is the problem I have . I'm only on Clubman membership and you have to nominate your local CPSA ground. I nominated Worsley, which then got deregistered from the CPSA, so now I don't have a nominated ground. As I understand it, I can shoot in any CPSA registered competition as "birds only". As a Clubman, we can't enter the competition properly, unless it's at our nominated ground (I don't have one). Alternative of course is to upgrade to full CPSA membership, but I'm too tight to do that Another alternative is to find non-CPSA competitions, i.e. "open" competitions, then you don't need CPSA membership at all. Good luck with your competitions mate :yp: I'm just starting to shoot in competitions and getting around some different grounds. I found it a bit nerve-racking at first, but that's wearing off

Another question, roughly how much does it cost to enter a 100 bird sporting? Dan Edited June 1, 2009 by reddan

Occasionally they can creep to £40. the bigger ones get up above £70, but they're 200 birds. It would be worth checking for non-CPSA comps as well. There are some very good ones. I've shot in a couple of Police shoots recently, one at Worsley and one at Doveridge. Anyone can enter, don't need CPSA membership. Good, reasonably testing shoots but not too difficult Edited June 1, 2009 by Chard

Dan You get all sorts at these things. Most of the entrants will be pretty good, but it's good practice at getting your confidence up. I'm OK, I don't really give a toss about what people think of me or the way I shoot, but that's just me. I still get a bit nervy in the bigger comps. If you're shooting in the 65-75% range at your local club shoot, you shouldn't feel awkward at these, I don't think. Just get relaxed and enjoy it. If you miss, you miss . I suppose it's different for different people, but I find on average, if I'm getting 80-85% at my club, I drop to 68-75% at a registered shoot, a bit less on the real big boys go-faster shoots :yp: I occasionally have a good day at a registered shoot, I have crept up to 82-83% on a couple of occasions, but they're the exception rather than the rule Edited June 1, 2009 by Chard
Peter De La Mare
Am I going to look a right *** if I enter and shoot really bad?Dan Suggest you have a look at the results for the English Open at High Lodge last month, and scroll down to the bottom of the list. This should make you feel a little better. http://www.cpsa.co.uk/scores/fixtures/37/44349 If I were you, I'd enter the British Open to experience a 'proper' competition, you'll find it far less daunting than you imagine. As Chard says, any competition really will give you the experience you're looking for.
Condor
I've been shooting for a few months now and also want to enter registered shoots / competitions, but am finding it all a bit daunting / bit of a mystery- I've joined CPSA (full membership) and nominated Doveridge as my club, but info is kinda hard to come by - there are lists there of registered shoots, but I'd like to know what to do / what not to do and like reddan, I'd like not to look a complete idiot.........it doesn't help that I'm female which automatically means you are in a minority at any given time at Doveridge, no doubt other grounds as well.........I'd really appreciate advice from the experienced shooters here!!! I also thought I might have a go on the line at Belvoir gamefair, maybe a few others, to get experience.

I found the staff at Doveridge to be very helpful and friendly. Just pick a shoot and go along and they'll show you where to book in and pay, give you your scorecard then just go and shoot all the stands. They'll tell you at booking in whether there's a ladies section you can enter or whether you're in with everybody else. There'll be a referee/scorer on each one, so just pick a moment when the ref isn't in the middle of buttoning and scoring and hand him your card. He'll call for shooters in order and away you go. You can ask to see a pair when you get into the stand, so he'll just let you have a look at what you'll be shooting at. It would be nicer if you could get to go with a couple of fellow shooters, but nothing to stop you going it alone. When you've shot all the stands, it's back to the clubhouse and hand your scorecard to the people who you registered and paid with. If in doubt, just ask someone. Oh, and then you just hang around to collect your prizes :look:
Condor
Oh, and then you just hang around to collect your prizes Veeeery funny :look: well one day hopefully yes!! I guess I always feel self-concious as I shoot alone and don't have a group of friends with me as none of them shoot Methinks perhaps I need some new friends who DO shoot, but Doveridge doesn't seem to be a very social sort of club - everyone hangs about in cliques and gets on with their own business. Staff are polite if you ask a question or are buying something, but there's no interaction of the friendly or welcoming kind, to make new members feel part of the group. Just my opinion, of course, we all have different experiences!! I suppose its probably best to just turn up one day at a registered shoot and get on with it, even if my nerves get the better of me. I have shot most of the standard Doveridge sporting pracrtice stands and vary from 60-80% - consistency is the problem - and have managed a 20/25 on the skeet range, but usually average about 17-18. Haven't tried any of the trap disciplines etc yet, just English Skeet and Sporting. I started shooting in December 08 and desperately need to make up for lost time as I've started shooting a bit late in life .

I started shooting in December 08 and desperately need to make up for lost time as I've started shooting a bit late in life . I'd say they were pretty good scores if you only started last December, I don't think you should worry too much about making a fool of yourself, you can obviously shoot. It is a pity none of your mates shoot, but if you become a regular there I think it's one of those things that will sort itself out. I also started shooting a bit late in life and when I started going to Worsley, I didn't know anyone. Now it's a major social event and you end up seeming as if you know everybody there. I'm not a particularly good mixer, I'm quite reserved (believe it or not) but I had four different invites to go clay shooting today and I couldn't go on any of them due to work commitments. It ends up taking over your life . Clubs can be cliquey, but you'll probably find that in no time at all, you're in one of them (or more than one of them ) You may find the first couple of comps a bit scary and daunting, but that should soon wear off
