Baldrick
Melanistic foxes are quite a rare sight (I've seen one live and one dead). The one I looked over was not actually black, more a deep brown with the gingerness clearly evident near the skin.
MC
Well this is weird, I saw a jet black fox last night whilst out walking my dog, it was an urban fox and it passed about 30 yards in front of me. It had a mangey old tail that had a grey tinge to it. I watched it for several minutes as it went across the playing field and into some crops in a surrounding field. MC
I suppose it is no different to getting black rabbits or squirrels, strange that there are a few about at the same time at different parts of the country.
MM
my first though was to drive over it It was quite large, not like your average fox size, much bigger. Deffo a fox though, as i got a good look at its tail and head. and this was at 7am.

Highlander
Several years ago whilst goose shooting in the wilds of Scotland we were laid up in a ditch in some pretty appalling weather one morning and two yes TWO (a pair) of very large black foxes ran across the field through our decoy pattern. I was in pole position to have a go at them with the trusty 10 bore until one of my daft mates couldn’t contain himself and shouted for me to shoot. Last we saw of those boogers but they were very large, scruffy and black like two Alsatians but definitely foxes as 6 witnesses would tell.
