skinny
hey all just made myself a magnet but the motor spins too fast, i tried using an interior dimmer switch of a mark two escort today, set it up at a nice speed, a pigeon came in before i could even sit down. but then the switch burnt out and broke. does any one have any other ideas of what could be used? Beardo
ah but it's not - that's the key! (and the one's on fleabay are only £12.99) Edited July 3, 2009 by nickbeardo
deny essex
If your budget is tight use a heater resistor coil from an old ford , located under the bonnet near the heater intake in a small holed metal cover , can operate to 3 speeds when wired in with connectors simply but switching over one lead, will go from around 30 rpm to a mid speed and flat out. i always carry one as a backup spare but have used the same one for years before i splashed out on a pucker speed controler, ok about my 4th speed controler , burnt 3 out ! hence the old faithful backup. Be warned the old ford wire resistors do get hot in use that is usual. Edited July 4, 2009 by deny essex
Beardo
they also drain the battery far quicker than a proper speed controller
deny essex
they also drain the battery far quicker than a proper speed controller They do drain more from the battery than a commercial bought speed controler, but on a 17amp hour battery they will last a days shooting plus for one full battery charge. MC
Google MAGTAME, I have one of his and my magnet will last nearly all day on a fully charged 7AH battery. They are about 15 quid including the post.
skinny
does magtame only deal on ebay? are you using a standard car battery? Edited July 5, 2009 by skinny
MC
I don't think so, although if you are the only bidder you can get them cheaper on e bay than buying them direct. I use a 12V 7 Ah battery like you get as a back up in house alarms.
mr salt
Hi i made a magnet years ago, when they were very dear. for the speed controller i went to the car breakers yard and found a rearstat, It was off a vw golf ,it was the switch that changed the brightness off the dash board lights. i guess any car that you can adjust the dash board lights will do.(most german ones). it worked and still does, the only problem with home made magnets is they tend to be to heavy to carry. cheers scott Mr salt
celtic invader
Try a speed controller from a scaletrics (spelling?) set. I used one for years, just take the spring off the trigger mechanism and position the trigger where you want in relation to the speed requirements and off you go. Can be quickly adjusted as required. Mine were sprayed to match the colour of the stubble and just left at the base of the rotary. Still going years after.

MC
I have just bought one from Ebay for £11.49 including post for a friends honey extractor. At that price it isn't worth messing about with anything else.

MC
This is not a cheapo one. It is a magtame and is exactly the same as the original one I have. It works faultlessly all day long.
