notsosureshot
Hi all, I've been pondering where to take my shooting "career". Shooting clay all the time is proving far too expensive (£100 a week at the moment) as I am perhaps a bit too keen (if thats possible). I'm looking into other possibilities, wildfowling and pigeon clubs being two. However, Im interested in what rough shooting might have to offer. Basically Im looking for somewhere I can go for a day out, take the wife, walk and shoot. Perhaps a picnic too and make a day of it. It might sound a bit pansy, but my wife is interested in the whole thing so it cant be bad! Would rough shooting offer this? If so, how would I go about finding some, I cant imagine its the same as requesting permission for pigeons and such. Many thanks. PS. Im in West Yorkshire. Breastman
It would be the same as pigeon permissions but the land would have to be vast to allow for a walking ramble, as opposed to just sitting in a hide waiting. So you'd be looking for permission on an estate more likely rather than a farm and trying to find that sort of permission can be like a hunt for unicorn do-do. Have you spoken to people at your clay club about it to see if any one there can get you a permission or need a hand with theirs? A friend of mine at my club has just got permission for rough shooting on an estate up here by getting talking to someone at a dog show, hopefully he's going to get me on there too. As long as you get the shooting rights (i.e. you become a 'occupier' of the land) and you clear taking guests with the land owner, i can't see why taking the missus/having a picnic would be a problem. Good luck Mark
notsosureshot
I had a feeling it would be rather complicated. Sometimes I wish I lived across the water. Pay for your licence, respect the law, off you go and hunt. None of this messing about grovelling. I am frustrated by fishing in the same way with private fishing rights. IMO, rights to fish the water ways should be public, same for shooting. Back to square 1. lol

Course waters you pay a licence fee and think you can go...oh no..round here most waters are owned by two clubs. You then have to pay for membership, pay extra for night fishing, pay extra for a 2nd rod etc etc etc..it's just throwing more and more money to them. When we first started rough shooting we went round as many golf courses as possible and spoke to the greenkeepers. Don't ask to speak to managers etc. they know nothing about what is on the greens at all. Got two courses that we look after very well at the moment. We then went to the local cattle markets with some A5 flyers and handed them out to farmers who were just stood about. DON'T disturb the ones who are bidding... Got chatting to a few and told them what we could do and how quickly we could be there and before we knew it we had 4 permissions in one day. When you meet anybody though dress relatively smart/casual. I would avoid hoodies, tracksuits etc. Just jeans and a jumper/shirt etc. They need to be reassured that you aren't some local chav who just wants to play Rambo on his land. Once you have one or two permissions you can use these as references for the rest. Ask them first mind... Good luck with it.
Ozzy Fudd
that sounds far too complicated for me! i mainly rough shoot, and all i do is walk around farm yards and fields all day, i dont see why you have to get access to a big estate?
