njc110381 Posted July 26, 2009 Report Share Posted July 26, 2009 (edited) .22 Hornet and reload. You can make a Hornet round for less than the price of a .17HMR round. The HMR will do the job as will a .22lr at very close range, but they're not really Foxing rounds and would be a very poor choice. The Hornet will kill a Fox with a chest shot at 150 yards with ease. Not as far out as a .222 or larger, but at half the price it depends what you want. If you're really on a budget you can get a Lee loader (google it) in .22 Hornet for about £30. With a tub of Lil-Gun powder (£40), primers (£10/1000), Cases (£30/100) and bullets (£12/100) you can make good ammo. Factory ammo is about £1 per round. If you take out the cost of the loader as it's a one off buy, you can load ammo for 20p per round. The cheapest ammo you can buy ready loaded is 45p per load. The Hornet is perfect to reload for on a budget. It uses next to no powder, cheap bullets, has great case life, costs less than a .17hmr or .22wmr rimfire if you reload and fires its bullets at 600+ ft-lbs. The best rimfire you can get will give you half that power. That's why I bought a Hornet! EDIT... And because it burns so little powder it moderates very easily. Even a good rimfire mod will work if you use the Lil-Gun powder. Cram a case full with powder and shove a bullet in on top of it and it will still only run at the same pressure as the .22WMR (honestly, I'm not joking)!
