Eating c r a p at night

Right 11 week old Jess has eaten her c r a p on two occasions at night. Never does it during the day, so we're not sure why she is doing it at night.

she has free run of the kitchen with one area papered where she likes to go. we did have he in the cage but she was getting so worked up that we thought she was going to injure herself, (got her paw caught in the bars twice) so keeping her locked in is not an option for us. we can't afford a broken leg!

thanks for any replies

She was wormed one week ago at the vet with drontal. her faeces aren't showing any signs of eggs/ worms (that i can see).

The food is Beta Puppy - she's been on it all the time so far.

I'm reluctant to give her more food as she has only just started walking and we don't want her getting fat, but also don't want her being hungry to the point she eats poo during the night.

Doesn't happen every night, just twice since we have had her - once two weeks ago and last night.

Going to try feeding her a bit earlier (currently 7pm and bed at 10:30) to see if she gets it out before bedtime as she generally doesn't go for a poo between dinner and bed.

My Cocker is now 10 weeks old, and is being fed 3 times a day with Alpha puppy food. I was concerend that she wasn't eating her food that quickly - taking up to 10 minutes to get through each sitting. In the end my wife bought some pedegree puppy food so I now mix a spoonful into the dry mix (which I then soak with water). She now eats this with gusto.

I also noticed that she had eaten her poo a few times during the night (caged and boxed out to give her space to lie down only). I thought this might be due to her trying to clean her space after messing so she could lie down again.

I have since also added a carrot into her daily meals, dividing it up between her feeds. Her poos have firmed up and she seems more consistent in her times now and hasn't had any accidents through the night since. I am currently giving her last feed at 5.30 and water is up at 7. She goes to bed at 11ish, and i get up at 5am to let her out for a poo and a wee.

cheers

I think you will find its the dry food which is the problem. They put flavour enhances in it and this makes the poo taste good.

I would also suggest you feed earlier, when you have your evening meal or as soon as you get home from work but around 6 would be good.

That way there is plenty of time to go outside during the evening and it should never be a problem again with luck.

Right, having been away camping for a few days we have got her sleeping in her crate from 10pm until 5:30am (I am usually up at 6 for work so i can cope with that) and we have been making sure all her food is finished by 18:00 so she's been going for a **** at about 21:30 and is then sleeping through the night without making a mess.

ok, so it's not just at night - I think it must be a boredom thing as she is also tearing up the newspaper we put down for her and scratching at the door/ carpet when she is locked in the kitchen during the day.

Will try the pineapple thing - I doubt this is a diet issue as she has no interest in doing it at any other times - looks to be just when she is bored. We don't have a choice about keeping her in the kitchen during the day as we both work a good few miles away and cant get back during the day.

Might try feeding her earlier in the morning (before 5:30am walks) to hope she has been for a **** before 07:30 when the missus leaves her for work.

any other suggestions?

I think you're going to have big problems, a sole lab left on its own for long periods in your kitchen is going to wreck the place through boredom. A kennel may be an option or another dog if thats possible but really you need someone about to let her out, **** eating is the first problem next will be destroying kitchen cabinets or going through the plasterboard

there must be a way of getting her out of it, the missus' parents have a boarder collie thats nutty as **** and craves attention but can be left all day long without issue!

:good:

what do all the other people who leave dogs at home all day do?

Hi James,

Your situation seems simialr to mine - here is what we do (all times are approx!!!:

6am get up and let the dog out for a wee - (she sometimes has a poo as well)

6.30am feed dog ( Alpha puppy food with a spoonful of puppy meat and warm water to soften and make a gravy and some chopped carrot). Dog will then have a poo within 20 mins of having breakfast, even if she also had one at 6am.

7.30 I leave for work, and the wife takes over as puppy minder.

8.15 pup is put in kennel with basket, water and a big hide bone to chew on - here is the link to the one I bought - http://www.airgunbbs.com/forums/showthread.php?t=352914

12.30 wife comes home from work and feeds dog same as breakfast. (will have a poo within 20 mins of finishig food)

1.15 dog back in kennel.

4.30 wife home from work followed by me not far behind. Dog let out of the kennel.

5.30 dog has dinner (poo straight after)

Dog is then in the house till 11pm when it goes out for a final poo/wee before being put in its cage in the kitchen.

And then we do it all again the next day!!!!

cheers

A few years ago i had this problem with a boxer pup and an american bulldog ( at different times ) the vet advised to put a few chunks of pineapple in its dinner, apparantly it makes the cr ap tastes worse,in the end i just made sure i was there at the right time to clear the mess up :good:

This fella is bang on, get some pineapple in its diet, or you can buy "forza 10" i think its called and mix it in with its meals.

You want to get it at least out of the habit of eating its own **** before it becomes conditioned to it.

My dog could **** for england..... i take him out 3 times a day - 7.30am - 3.30pm and again at around 8pm and he goes everytime,he is an English bullterrier and must be the most peculiar dog in the world,he has never attempted to eat any **** infact it is the the complete opposite, you should see the face he pulls when he smells it ..............he is quite hilarious sometimes.

I think some dogs are just born wrong.....i have a friend with 2 yorkies and 1 alsation,1 of the yorkies eats the alsations **** but not his own or the other yorkies......must be just one of those things...............i think the best thing is to clean it up asap and then it might forget all about doing it.
