samowen318
My ferrets keep getting ticks, i dont know where these keep coming from, possibly the rabbits i feed them, but i cant get rid of them, i need an effective way to get rid of them in the cages and a way to treat the ticks on the ferrets themselves. Thanks Sam
Ferret Master
Clean out all bedding, treat ferrets with Frontline spray and use an O'Tom tick remover to remove any of the parasites already attached. You could freeze the rabbits before feeding them to kill off any parasites. FM
samowen318
Cheers FM I feed them a rabbit and a chicken maybe twice a month if that but i cant understand where they keep coming from and there is alot of them. I have a 2 cage set up, my ferret died a few months back wen the tick problem started to occur, then i cleaned and disenfected the cage, then that cage hasnt been used for months and i get 2 new ferrets 1 day ago put them in that cage and find at least 10 ticks on each one this morning, but not 1 tick on any of the ferrets in the top cage. So i have thoroughly disenfected each cage, burnt every corner with a blow torch, used bug spray and i am getting some frontline straight away in the morning for the ferrets. Are they potentially fatal to ferrets, if left untreated?? And are they difficult to get rid of??
Hezbear
they won't be fatal unless it's a bad infestaition, i found a albino jill 2 years ago that had 37 ticks on it. She was off colour for a few days afterwards but she fed up nicely and became a good worker although she wouldn't work rats. What bedding are you using as they could be in the straw if that is what you are using
andyrew
Hi have a good look around your hutch ticks love grass so If there is long grass anywhere near you hutch I would cut it back, also check the cement lines of any near by brickwork cause the little bug**rs, can survive a long time just waiting for the next meal, frontline will kill them and should give a couple of weeks protection, just remember to kill any you get off by droping them on a sheet of paper and set a light to it. samowen318
Got sum frontline today. Everything in the hutch has been cleaned out and sprayed down, no grass just pebbles a few bushes, a patio and a compost heap but there is a wall and wooden fence next to the cage where they cud be hiding in the gaps. Surely the ferrets in the neighbouring cage or my dogs wud hav sum on them if they hav been hiding around the walls etc, but they dont. aaron airgunner
heres a good tip: find the ticks on the body of the ferret and get one of those ear cleaning things and completely coat one end of it in tick spray. then coat every tick by brushing the swab directly onto them and they'll soon die and drop off. Ferretboy111
Yeah frontline is the best stuff.

Bob Martin is toxic and ineffective. Buy proper Frontline (or get some Stronghold from the vet) The Otom tick removers are the best way to remove any ticks already attached
Stealth Stalker
My guess would be you are using straw for the bedding, the ticks will be living in this I used straw bedding once & all my ferts were covered in the space of a couple of days, I frontlined them all & dissinfected the court. And reverted back to sawdust bedding & have never had a problem since SS
samowen318
Thanks all. Problem seems to be solved for now and hopefully for the future

Thanks Sam if your using them for ferreting, they will always get ticks, from being down the warren, simply get hold of some tick pullers and check ferrets after each ferreting trip, saves money on potions and lotions
