Shotgun lamping - semi auto gun mounted light

Hi,

I want to lamp alone with a shotgun (sometimes) and although my lightforce 140 & 170 are great for rifle shooting, they are not too good for shotgunnig.

My preferance is for a small torch (fenix, surefire size) to be mounted under the barrel (attached to the barrel somehow I guess) and use a stock mounted switch like the lightforce ones.

So what do I need, brackets, mounts & light / switch ?

+ if it can be 12 bore mounted for Charlie & 20 bore mounted for bunny's in thick cover so much the better.

Not too fussed about filters, as I am sure I can improvise those.

Cheers

Hi mate i use a Logun gun lamp. These are made for air rifles but if you unscrew the holder and tape the lamp on your shotgun it works a treat. Bit crude i know but does everything you need it to do, very bright and light, just put the battery pack on your belt and your away. You can get a filter pack for them if needed. http://extorian.co.uk/shooting/Images/lamp.jpg. Take a look at the link you will see what i mean happy hunting.

I had a Deben mini with mounts etc but advice off PW( J Galway) got me onto just holding a torch.Simple and effective. The range of a D cell LED torch is plenty for a shotgun and you dont have to mess around with trailing wires and the rest of the kit. Very easy to get the hang of and of course much cheaper.

John, I kitted two shotguns out with Lightforce barrel mounts about 18 months ago (I'm sure it was your photos of a shotgun rigged with a 170 that I saw). I only have the 170 lamps, and whilst they are heavy and bulky, they are reliable and can be swapped straight on to a rifle in under 10 seconds if needed. The 100w beam is more of an advantage than a hindrance. I set mine up with the lamp as close to the tip of the fore-end, to help balance things.

You could of course use a universal gun mount of the velcro variety, I have two that I use on my PCP and I think they're available on that auction site thingy for around £4 each. I like the velcro mount as they're very off and on-able without the need for spanners, allen key or screwdrivers.

I can take a picture if you want to see one?

I'd imagine for the ranges you're working at you could use a small Fenix, although they're quite pricey. I ended up modding a mini-maglite for my PCP (the AA variety) by adding a terralux CREE led for around £14 and then adding the Tac-Star mini maglite pressure switch for another £14. I can easily spot bunnies and foxes out to 80 yards and the light is good enough to get a clear shot at ranges under 40 yards which is probably all the shotty is good for too. It's a bit more compact than those whopping great lamps (although they're great for rifles I admit) and means you can keep both hands on the gun.

Having the velcro mounts and terralux upgrade means when I'm not using my torch on the gun I have a very useful, bright pocket sized torch. I like multi function stuff; mainly due to the fact that I'm a bit tight.

Just a thought...
