blackthorn
cheers next thought best way of polishing, dont want to use varnish, and i would like to leave it natural wood, instead of painting it
Llanshooter
Nice one I would suggest sanding it as fine as you can (1200grit from wet & dry) halfords and giving it a few coats of Tung oil, with the first two or three coast diluted 50:50 with white spirit, and the last couple applied as neat oil. shows the grain off nicely and finishes off nicely

mick miller
danish oil or linseed oil would be fine too, and yes you can use it on the shank nay bother. you'll need to keep applying it from time to time as in the immortal words of ELO.... 'it's a living thing' 50:50 with white spirit for the first coat is the way to go, as already suggesterised. looks spot on mate, a nice bit 'o whittlin' indeedy.
