Holland&Holland
Last week i was invited to go after red deer at a gliderairfield. All red deer are open right now, but most stags have gone to their rutting area's which are unfortunately not on this gliderfield. Nevertheless stags are still an option. So got up at 03.30 and was at the permission at 04.30. Better be early then to late i always say. Stalked to the high seat and heard some red deer run off in the dark. Still had good hopes and climbed on the high seat. Red deer can be shot 30 minutes before sunrise and 30 minutes after sunset. A hind and calf came 20 minutes before that timeline and i happily let them pass. Half an hour past sunrise a hind, yearling and calf came out of cover in front of me. They nibbled at the heather and small trees. When they where around 70 meters and the calf was broadside i fired. Calf went down. The hind and yearling trotted off for 40 meters and then stood still. I aimed at the yearling and shot that one too. It kicked it's hindlegs (what's in a name ) But it just walked off towards to woodland. It stood in cover for 10 seconds and walked away. I felt good about my shot but decided i wait a while. Then i first looked after the calf and gutted that. I contacted the owner of the permission and he shot a fallow spiker which also run off. So we decided to call a mate who has excellent tracking dogs. To my dissapointment i had to go to a meeting for work but promised to be back at 12 o'clock. Cancelled my other appointments for the day and was back at the scene at 12.30. The spiker was already found. It lay only 40 meters from the place where he shot it. That was good news. Now for my yearling hind. I had marked a spot of blood where it went in to cover, only found the one drop. But the dog went straight ahead and after 60 meters found a large puddle of blood. It probably been laying there for a while. Then the dog went off again. Through thick cover, over a fence (which had blood at the top), over a grassy field, then the dog started to sway a little, and then after another 30 meters we found the yearling hind, dead. I was very pleased that we found it. The shot was high on the shoulder and after gutting it we found that the top of the lungs where both hit. Entry and exitwound where open but strange we did not find more blood. Still we all where happy bunnies in the end. Off course the dog got well rewarded for her effort ! Pedro
A top result H&H and it shows the worth of a good dog. I've been lucky so far and not had a long distance runner, (only about 30m), but I'm dreading the day I do. P.
