My mates having trouble with his s510, with inconsistant groups. The gun was fine last week. Checked all options, tried a different scope to no avail. after a phone call to air arms he has been told to clean the barrel thoroughly. He was advised the felt cleaning pellets are a waste of time. He's off to kibworth tomorrow to get a cleaning kit (then he can bring it round mine and i'll do my barrel hehe). If you put any cleaning solution napier,bisley,b-c, v90 etc; you must make sure you remove it all with the cleaning wads afterwards. Do not use shotgun, firearm barrel solutions in airguns. Its too strong(to be able to remove gunpowder) and will damage airgun barrels. .........jamie

I only clean mine after at least a tin of pellets have gone through it, if changing pellet type or if it's grouping poorly. It takes maybe 20 shots to re-lead the barrel after cleaning, so cleaning after every use is a waste of time and pellets. I use a dry pull through and finish with drop of oil on it.

I had an issue with a slightly over generous application of pellet lube to a tin of pellets and this would make the gun diesel. I would then tend to clean the barrel.. I use cigarette filters but I was only after cleaning any soot or excess oil out. Now I have stopped using pellet lube the gun doesn't diesel anymore so I don't clean the barrel.

You need a nice coating of pellet dust in there to lubricate the barrel properly, cleaning the barrel removes that and you need then to let it build up again.

So roughly how many pellets before accuracy is lost? My TX200 has done over 1000 pellets and I have never cleaned it. Maybe it's about time I did!

I'd say if it's still shooting true, then it's nicely run in and leave it alone.

Hello Mate,

Hope the rifle is serving you well. When I had it I I only cleaned the barrel on a couple of occassions and it didn't seem to make any difference really. I would just give it a pull through and a drop of oil if its been out in the rain.

I used to clean mine once in a blue moon. When I did mine, u used to put a few drops of 4 in 1 oil on a roll-up cigarette filter tip and fire it down, I would then fire 4 or more clean and dry ones down it to clean up the oil. next, take the gun down the field and check your zero. Seemed to work a treat for me. :good:

we got the cleaning kits today and the improvement on chev's s510 is massive. with the breech open you couldnt see down the barrel, such was the build up of lead. after cleaning the barrel and putting a couple of mags through it, the inconsistency had disappeared and it was tip top. i did my fn12 and after 20 or so pellets it was an inch to the left and an inch high, but pellet on pellet. zeroed and deadly accurate. lamping tomorow night :good:

ive had lots of airrifles over the years, some are more pellet fussy/ fouling fussy than others, i had a career that was a nightmare with it , it pays to clean every now and again when you notice your groups opening a little, i just use a few cigerette filters , the groups will then open up for about 10-15 shots and after releading will come on song again. this has been the same in pretty much all my rifles over the years. when i get a new gun i always give the barrel a deep clean and start from a shiney barrel inside and just build up lead till it shoots sweet. at 12 ft/lbs it takes ages to foul up , but at certain fac levels it can foul within 50 shots, sometimes less, depending upon pellet type etc etc..... glad to see you have sorted it out , if when you looked down you could see shavings of lead, have a second look at the transfer port to see if its catching the head of the pellet.
