Mungler
Is there a hint of I wish I'd listened in that! Mine shoots fine now - sub 1" at 100 yards. A bit of the right ammo and some good advice. Also mine was cheap and so it's a knock about - if it gets bashed, there will be no tears. EDIT: The key bit of advice was "cleaning" - 20 rounds through the Howa and it needs a quick clean (read pull through with bore snake for me). The good news is the first round after cleaning is still spot on. Edited September 28, 2009 by Mungler
Dunkield
I had a Howa thumbhole in 223, and it shot very well. but I would never advise one for a general purpose .223 because it's a 1:12 twist barrel so if you want something for the range, it ain't it! That would depend on your definition of general purpose, <most> people on here would class that as foxing/vermin with up 55grn rounds for which 1:12 is absolutely fine. If you want to shoot longer ranges/heavier bullets than you are right a tighter twist is essential.
Mr_Logic
That's true to a point, but in this case the original post specified range work, and a 1:12 twist barrel really isn't up to it apart from the occasional bit. Personally, I classify general purpose as field and range work, but then I do both so my mindset works that way.
