Topgunners
I went out yesterday for a look at the few remaining fields of stubble that have not been ploughed. I drove round a fair number of farms and the pigeons just were not any where in any numbers. A lot of the fields were being drilled with wheat, or being rolled ready for planting. I finally decided to drop on a recently drilled field of wheat where the seeds have just opened and the shoots were about 1" long and just under the top soil. there were a few pigeons dropping in tight to the hedgerow and a few rooks and jackdaws out in the middle. I set up 2 patterns of decoys - pigeons straight out in front and crows out to my left. The odd pigeon was dropping in to the deeks and the rest I shot were ones that were flying past. Very slow afternoon and I ended up with 27 pigeons and 5 blackies. View from above netting View from behind stealth ghost netting I picked up about 5.30pm as I had arranged to meet a new acquaintance I had met on my travels; who had just bought a brand new 3" magnum Browning Citori 12g shotgun. He asked me could he have a go with it on some wildfowl. I arrived at the field where we were to meet up and sat watching the skies for any movement. About 15minutes later he arrived and I told him what the flight lines that the Geese had taken the night before were. Being the gent that I am, I gave him first choice of the favoured flight-line and then we popped up to the pond for a quick look to see if there were any ducks on it. I let him approach from the open end , take-off route and clapped my hands from the rear of the pond. A solitary duck took off and swung to my left and I shot and missed it but fortunately as it flew higher it swung round to his right and he dropped it first shot. New gun now well and truly christened, and he came up to me with his prize duck in his hand and a prize smile on his face. We then split up and walked to our arranged shooting positions in the field and just as he was approaching the far hedgerow, the first skein of geese flew straight towards him and he spun round and dropped a goose with his second shot. 20 minutes later a big flock of about 40 odd flew over his head from behind him but unfortunately he fired both barrels but did not hit one. They were quite high up at that stage and as they flew towards me I had a shot at them but none dropped. We waited till about 30 minutes after dark and met up back at the jeeps. He was "happy as larry" at christening his new purchase and we will be going out early mornings over the weekend with the full monty. Plastic full-bodied decoys, silo-sock type american decoys and callers. Dave K Edited September 27, 2009 by Topgunners
