Worzels First Fox

had a call last night from the owner of our smallholding permission saying that another fox is starting to become a nuisance around the new lambs and can we come and see what we can do.

as I had to sell my rifles a while ago for financial reasons it meant we could only use the shotgun.

we have accounted for a few on this permission previously using the u caller and rifle but I was not hopeful calling one in to shotgun range.

we arrived and shot a few rabbits with the air rifle and after a chat with the owner about where she has seen the fox entering the field we decided on a spot to lie up. we were positioned alongside the hedgeline to our left and had a pile of old branches measured at 27 yards away where we placed a dead rabbit and the caller.

after 20 minutes of calling the fox appeared about 100 yards away but was not looking like it would come into us, I decided to change the call to one that had a higher pitch to it and the fox immediately turned and ran towards us for about 20 yards then shot into the cover of the bushes.

we kept up the calling hoping it would keep coming through the trees and bushes, worzel was waiting poised with the shotgun when it appeared exactly where we hoped it would and 36g of BB shot dropped it stone dead.

absolutely chuffed to bits that our plan worked to perfection and that Worzel claimed his first fox. neither of us could stop grinning, and it always cracks us up when the permission owner comes galloping across the field all excited that we have got another.

after many days with no luck on the pigeons its great to have a successful trip out.

picture is of a very happy Worzel.

well done mate!!!!! shame you cant take a non blurry photo!!!

Well done, there is nowt wrong with the shotgun. Mostly when I take a guest out I carry one as a back up while lamping or in fields unsafe for rifle use. I am a bit of a luddite stuck in my ways but am considering an electronic caller more and more each year sounds like it was just the trick for you

i have found the caller very good, ideal for scenario i described as the fox does not come to where you are when using a mouth caller but wherever you leave the electronic call, ideal for ambush especially when using a rifle and you need to take your shot facing a certain direction for backstop
