gixer1
Folks, I posted a topic a while ago about the minimu length for a 243 win barrel as I am trying to make my rifle as compact as possible, i'm pretty sure a few people said around 29" but i was looking on the Ruger website and they list a 16.5" barrel on the hawkeye M77 I was thinking of getting my barrel recrowned (as I read a good write up on how important this is for accuracy recently) and I figured if I was going to chop the barrel that would be the time to do it! What do you all think? and how much roughly to chop and recrown a barrel? See below for the ruger web site http://www.ruger.com/products/m77HawkeyeLa...act/models.html Regards, Gixer1

Mr_Logic
I missed your other thread - what are you trying to do with the rifle? The 243 is a very overbore calibre so you do notice the result of any barrel chop in terms of velocity, in a big way.
Rem223
The Remington model 7 has a 20" barrel. I would not want to go any shorter than that. Otherwise you would be better off with a different calibre. The difference in velocity of a 16.5" barrel vs a 24" is in the region of 225-375fps. Not earth shattering but more than I would want to sacrifice. Without a moderator the muzzle blast would be pretty obnoxious too.
gixer1
I'm basically looking to make it a compact and light rifle, and was just wodering about the M77 (having a 16.5" barrel) does anyone have this rifle and if so does it seem alot different to a 20" barrell for discussions sake? The rifle would be moderated so muzzle flash should not be an issue. Thanks folks, Gixer
Mr_Logic
What are you looking to shoot with it? It will be illegal to shoot deer with such a compact rifle as you will not reach the required muzzle energy due to extreme velocity loss. Also I expect the velocity to be over 400-450fps down on a 24 inch barrel. Basically - I wouldn't do this! You could with 308, just about, but not 243. Dunkield
hi i have a rem severn 243 with a 16.1/2 barrel and T8 mod it hits what point it at with no problems what so ever That's as maybe, but as Mr L has pointed out, if you are shooting deer with it and it is under the energy level you are breaking the law
starlight32
That's as maybe, but as Mr L has pointed out, if you are shooting deer with it and it is under the energy level you are breaking the law Barrel length of 22" was always the norm for a required burn with .243. Got to say I have never verified that point nor seen it verified, and it is extremely unlikely it would ever be put to the test in the field or in court as is case with many other abiquities in firearms law. Dunkield
A member of this forum wanted to shoot deer with a .44 and was asked to produce some loads that were deer legal to be tested by prior to his FEO adding deer to that calibre so it does happen. If the attitude is doesn't matter you may as well use just a .
al4x
wouldn't it help to kill your moderator pretty fast if you're still trying to burn a fair amount of powder in it? Bignoel what were the reasons for chopping it that short as to me it defeats a lot of the point of a .243 making it illegal for deer
