I was talking to my Cousin who works as an aircraft engineer on a local air strip and he was telling me that the grass area's are riddled with rabbits. I asked him to ask if we can get permision to do some cleaning up of the pest problem there as he also has a SGC but doesn't have a shhot. He asked this morning and they said YES Whenever we want. The question is, I love shottie shooting, is it possible to use the shottie on rabbits or will we be wasting our time? My cousin has an air rfle but I don't, if I was to buy one what would you recomend without me paying the earth for one. I don't really want to get into a whole new world where I need to start buying kit from scratch again if I can avoid it. What should I expect to pay for a gun that would also be allowed for use under my SGC.

Thanks to you Paul, you are a gent to deal with, my mate left my house a little while ago heading to yours to pick it up. Distance? Why does that matter! My mates doing a 300 mile journey to pick it up. It's worth it!! -
Hi guys, just wanted to say thanks for the advice. I think the majority advice was for second hand. I've done the deal with Paul from this forum, my friend has just left to go and collect the Bettinsoli he was selling here. Looks like a cracking gun my mate's bought, 30" barrels, excellent condition, selective trigger, 18 months old. Paul was a gent to deal with as well. Looking forward to seeing it myself.

Thanks for the advice guys, sounds like MY tip (well I don't have to tell him you all helped) will be to go second hand.

A friend has just got his SGC. Just wondering what your thoughts are on whether he goes for new or secondhand with a budget of £400 - £500 The gun will be used between once a week and once every two weeks, mainly for pigeon/game. I have seen a brand new Baikal for about £450, 28.5" barrells, O/U, selectable trigger and multi choke. Would you rather get a better gun/make secondhand or something brand new considering the amount of shooting he will be doing?

Shame I don't live nearer to you, I'd go and pace it out with you. With a shottie off course

A friend is looking for a first gun, to mainly use for pigeon shooting. I have found this gun, can anyone tell me if this sounds like a good deal and any comments on the gun. Browning 12 gauge Medalist Over and Under second hand Shotgun (R/H) Barrel: 30" Stock: 15" Chokes: Multi & Multi Trigger: Single Trigger, Ejection £395 Thanks guys

I have an old Italian gun that has had many layers of wood stain put on to the stock. Is it possible for me to strip it down to bare wood and start again? Could I get a decent finish on it again? What methods and materials should I use? Ideally I'd like to refinish in a dark shade.

Hi mate, This is an enquiry for a friend who has is SGC granted, waiting for the inspection on his cabinet he fitted this weekend. I'm not an expert on guns but reading the replies you have this sounds like a decent one. Can you tell me how old this gun is, and how much they cost new? Thanks
-
I'm no expert, but watching a shooting DVD last night, "the expert" on there was using a brand new gun and he mentioned his face bruising up; and that he would look at reducing the comb of the gun. It wasn't an adjustable comb so I presume a gunsmith would shave it down......

12 of the deeks are shell type and two that I use for lofting are full body. I'll be honest I just don't fancy the idea of the guille suit so I'm going to go down to the local army surplus store to look at a couple of lightweight nets.
-
Just did a search and can't find anything on shooting (shottie's, pigeons etc) magazines. Looked in shops and still can't find any. What do you guys read or recommend?
-
OK, to answer some questions first: The large hold-all is one of those rucksacks I carry on my back. In it I put, the spinseat bucket at the bottom, inside that are the 14 deeks and a large screwdriver to dig the deek sticks in if the ground is hard. Then next to that go the 12 (metal) eezy wobblers. On top of that goes my rucksack which keeps tidy a flask (1lt) a sandwich (tupperware) box, cartrides, a multitool (small and light), spare lighter (a must to feed my dirty habit), hat, balaclava (in case gets real cold) and gloves. The large rucsack also has two long side pockets where I put the hide poles and if it comes with me the magnet arms, in the other pocket goes the shottie. So that lot's on my back, one black bin liner full of army net in one hand and the magnet (if it comes) with a battery in the other hand. That still don't take my bouncers (home made and too long, as they don't extend and solid metal rod so could be lighter), these can also fit in the rucksack side pockets but stick up like tank antena's. I'm 42 and quite quite fit but this really is a struggle. I can't park any closer and have to walk a good few hundred metres to any of the spots I choose. Idea's so far: 1 chuck sell the army net (money can go towards two lightweight 10 x 6 nets. Does anyone use the type that don't have a string net backing? Are these strong enough or do they rip first outing? 2 Look into the balloon golf trolley. 3 Look for lighter bouncers and shorter so they extend (recommendations welcome) Note, I notice lots of advise but no one else complaining really, am I just being a wooss.....?

I need to cut down some weight from the gear I carry. How much gear do you guys carry if you ain't lucky enough to be able to drive to the spot? Here's my usual gear on a day's shoot: Shottie (12g o/u) Carts (usually 100) Large carry all rucksack Bucket seat 12 shell deeks 4 full body deeks Eezy wobbler sticks (metal type) Large net 4 hide poles Another rucksack (for sarnies, coffee flask, knife, bits and bobs) This lot above, barring the net, fills the large carry all and weighs plenty. What I don't take every time because of the weight are a couple of home made bouncers and a magnet....... I want to cut the weight but I can't see what can be left behind!!! First to get the chop I think is my heavy net (20' x 8'), I rekon to buy two lightweight ones, any suggestions? Are the lightweight nets any good? I've seen some Jack pyke net which is 3m x 1.4m and weighs .30kg, thinking maybe 2 of these would still be a lot lighter than my 2000kilo net...... Am I the only one with this problem?

5 farms still no joy Not giving up, really have to try and find my own permision so I can go any time including midweek. Thinking of using the calling card method and even yellow pages.... Getting desperate! any more tips would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance guys

I didn't think of using ally at all....! I'm going down to the local DIY centre to grab a couple of squares. Thanks for that. I'm still interested to see if anyone else has tried making them. Not much response here so maybe not.

I use one of these, stands about 42" high and fits loads inside plus has two side pockets where you can put hide poles in and even the shottie. Cost me £25 from an alteranative online supplier to our sponsored one. I also have one of those spinning bucket seats which is excellent. Sits at the bottom of the hold-all and can store loads inside too. Same price as bag. PM me if you want more info.

I'm thinking about making some spinning wing decoys, but I can't get my head around what material to use to make them with. I've come up with some ideas for the rotor shaft but need to design the wings first so I can work out how to attach them. Has anyone else tried this?
