Why bother cross breeding when you got the benefit of years of selective breeding for work- ignore show bloodlines at all costs- if you want the best of both get one of each. I have 3 springers and a lab! Horses for course- mind the lab was reared with springers and enters brambles like them!

Ive just had a look at PuBS Forum - www.pubs.myfunforum.org - theres a few shoots in your area already asking for beaters and you dont even have to be a member of it, and its free anyway.

Try PuBS Pickers up Beater Shoots - www.pubs.myfunforum.org- no charges at all- and Ive got beating and picking up through them quickly just by using their forum. I believe that they are running all inclusive beaters courses next season which are on one of the shoots where I beat, on a shootday with all meals included and theres no charge involved either. In the current economic climate every little freebie helps.

Because any one any good at those jobs doesnt need to be an mp - look at most mp s - would you employ them?

Watch the ewes dont get their heads stuck I had one of the low galvanised ones and one ewe even laid on her side and managed to get stuck- devil of a job to release her

I beat or pick up on several shoots in Gloucestershire within the radius you mention. One shoots wednesdays, some fridays and some saturdays. pm me for more info

I once new an old farmer who said that meat eaters should be prepared to kill and butcher their own food - somewhat extreme in this pc age. I dont feel that if you eat meat, shoot clays that you should be disparaging about game shooting, pigeon etc. In any walk of life snobbery always rears its head - its down to people with defective human natures!

I joined PuBS- and got plenty of beating and some picking up quickly but as i am retired i am available at short notice which is what many keepers need when someone falls ill - once you get a foot in the door at a shoot it nearly always follows that more invites will come as quite a few keepers help out in the beating team on other shoots

google "shootpics" - very good articles on beatin and picking up by people who have vast experience- should be "the beaters bible" imho
