never actually had a pellet hit me surprisingly but most seasons i have pellets zinging past whilst beating, and at one shoot the guns were warned that a beater would be in the game covert on the hill brow, that was very close!! Had a friend who shot at a partridge near some telephone wires and the ricochet was hard enough to break the skin on his forehead, very lucky it wasnt his eye, and his head has a thick bone layer! Bled quite well!!

Torngate evevelyn has whelped to my choc lab which I fostered and do not have papers for, the dam is registered and has many ftchs in her pedigree, working both beating and picking up and both have wonderful temperaments, I shall work the choc this season even though he came totally untrained. 1 black dog, 3 yellow dogs, 2 yellow bitches priced very reasonably to ensure valued in good working homes but will be great pets too. looking for £100 as not registered will be flead and wormed vaccination by purchasers vet as I have found they all use different vaccination products! SACS reads good on there website , ie . cover for all shooting , beating , hunt following etc all things i do , but not many people have heard of them and there website is so incomplete its a joke to say they,ve been going since 1994. There has been a debate on the SACS cover regarding the cover for beasters who may get paid either cash or a brace of birds and the person who set up this insurance has stated that any payment will render the cover invalid. Check with your household insurers they may offer cover

google shootpics, there are comprehensive articles on beating and picking up there, if it aint in there it aint worth knowin.

As soon as people pay money for something then their expectations are raised. NOBS paid some £13,000 for computer hardware and software to record members, shoots etc but their office is only manned by a volunteer, who also happens to be the sole shareholder, mondays to fridays 9.00am until 2.00pm. It is a limited company with a Board of Directors, not elected by people paying fees, and their accounts show a turnover of some £24,000per annum in total from all sources, which indicates that they do not have 9,000+ paid up members. PuBs is an informal forum which operates 24/7. relying on shoots and people posting vacancies and actually liaising between themselves to fill vacancies, thus it does not need a massive database, membership is not even required to use it. Good news is that it works quite well. At one shoot where I personally beat there were 4 beaters sourced via PuBS, at another half the team were found by PuBS. You pays yer money or not it seems. At the end of the day the main point is to get people, especially younger people for there lies our sports future, out with us in enjoying countrysie pursuits.

If you want to go beating at the estate i can arrange it - and mine is a pint!!! Glad that dave was found a place there - the keeper knows his busines, his birds are in exceptional condition and fly very well - offering the guns some testing shooting. Their Keepers Day is exactly the same as a full days shooting, the keeper is even more stressed than normal!!! And you will get to try some of my cooking - especialy the leek, mushroom and stilton cheese tart!

Buy a thermal probe to ensure that the meat at the centre of the pig is cooked, google "Food Standards" and you will get the required temperatures (Im too fat and full of wine to look it up for you). Used to do catering at shows etc and have been ill after sampling some hog roast where the meat was not cooked properly. Last thing you want is all your guest getting the ****s! Or get some cheap beer and blame it all on that!!! Probes arent that dear- £20- £30 on fleabay but get the ones with a probe so you can check core temp.

NOBS or PuBS doesnt matter so long as people get out there with us. I got extra picking up from PuBS but you have to persevere and keep looking at their forum as new vacancies will be posted as the season progresses and some of a shoots regular team fall ill or change shifts etc. Dont know how NOBS works as I wont pay a fiver Im too tite. Once you initially get on one shoot then more opportunities will develop when people get to know you and recomend you to other shoots. On many of the shoots I go some of us beat or pick up on two or more local ones too, nice to see familiar faces sometimes! Good luck mate

I didnt even have to join PuBS,as membership isnt necessary, www.pubs.myfunforum.org. , and got all the picking up I needed and it didnt cost me a penny. Contact PuBS admin he has contacts all over the place and may know someone personally, or you can just post what you want on the Forum. Everything PuBS does is free.

I still belong to NOBS Forum but cant post or private message as I dont want to pay NOBS £5 for the pleasure. I joined PuBS Pickers up Beaters Shoots www.pubs.myfunforum.org and got all the beating and picking up i needed- but didnt have to pay a single penny and you dont even have to register either. I believe that they are running beaters courses on a shoot next season, including meals, refreshments and a brace of birds- and they are free too. Freedom of choice - pay or not pay- up to you

I joined PuBS www.pubs.myfunforum.org , but membership isnt needed to use it, got all the picking up I needed.For free. They are running beaters courses too,on a proper shootday, all meals and an oven ready brace of birds, all free as well. Im tempted to sign up just for the grub.

I believe that they are running beaters courses on a real shootday in november, and chuck in a full english and roast lunch etc all free too. Sounds like they have had so much interest that they have to run three or more now and I confess i am tempted to sign up just for the food.
