  10. Here are some pics of Woody, my 4 month cocker,,,,he is turning out to be a real good un...but time will tell Also a pic of Maggie, my lakeland Terrier, she is totally devoted to me but is very gun shy and is quite a nervous girl in general. for some reason that particular pic looks like its been photoshop'd...?
  11. Ok..just a quick question....but first 'a so far' Woody is 17 weeks old tommorrow....so far he can.. His temperament is about average i guess, he tends to be somewhere in the middle when it comes to determining a soft or harder nature. retrieve...he is very keen with this,he probably has on average no more than 4/5 retrieves a session...but as of the last week or so he is refusing to bring to hand, which he did before.he now prefers to stop about2 feet short of me and role on his back with the dummy,i spent the last week backing off from him and recalling him to me in an effort to get him to deliver but he just does the same thing.so as off today i have decided to take a step back ,stop retrieves altogether and just concentrate on getting him to come back to me on a recall, with all the praise i can give so that he associates the pleasure of just returning to me.However, with just a plain recall, he tends to stop short of me, which means i have the same situation.not sure i understand why, as it is only when we are in a walk/training situation that he does this.when we are at home he is all over me.....? His hunting ability is excellent, he turns on two whistle(mouth)90% of the time, and only needs encouragement on the odd occasion.i cant fault his ability here,i dont expect him to be spot on as it is early days. He sits when asked, not for an extended period, but he does ok,still gets distracted, but we are working on it. Now i know that i will probably get some stock answers to the question and that it all depends on the dog ,but ... 1.what should i be expecting from him at this stage? 2.what should i be looking to work on , in additon to strengthening the stuff we've been doing already? as always gents, your comments(or criticism) are appreciated.. Daz
  12. Early days mate...just done all this with my little cocker... First two weeks were a biy hit and miss because,he was a baby and they lack control..forget allthe stuff about them not wanting to mess their crates,or where they sleep...if they need to go they will...couple of thingsthat worked for me.... I always keep the same routine...wake up ...dog straight outside with my other dog, which is where they stay until breakfast at eight.Dinner is at four pm after which i religiously crate him while we have our dinner, after which i take him straight out on his walk,by which time he is more than ready... during the day, if its nice out he spends a lot of time outside, or with the back door open so he can come and go ashe pleases, within limits. I always associate my actions with sounds(quick,quick..outside...good boy),so that he now understands what is required of him and anyway if i have my timing right he responds well. Its a matter of patience, what works for one may not for another...they all take different times to train...but patience is the key.he will get it...just try to keep calm in the interim..he will read your anxiety and this wont help with his responses to you.. give it a couple of weeks mate, he will get it,mine still has the odd accident, but always because we have missed the signs/or because i am at work and i cant expect my family to be as vigilant as i am. it also helps(talking of reading the signs)if you can learn to notice his different signals that he gives when he is ready, this will help with the bond and understanding between you. good luck Daz
  13. Thanks WGD...i was hoping some one would help make the journey a bit shorter.... this is the first time i have ever trained a dog, so it takes me a lot longer to work out where he is coming from....but what you said makes absolute sense i will take on board what you have said and let you know ina week or two how he is getting on. thanks for the viewpoint.. Daz
  14. might sell better in the for sale section matey
  15. Thanks Alan... hes a handsome chap, but i meantto mention in the post that the credit for the pics must go to the father-in-law, he is a dab hand with the camera..all i did was set woody up for him. cheers
  16. Well these are the latest pics of the woodster...he is totally awesome..mental...but good. it has been a real learning curve(not for him..he knows what he is doing..lol) we have had a fair bit of jealousy from my other dog,but she seems to be calming down abit know. when i started this diary,i have to be honest i never really appreciated how time consuming he would be,so i am afraid it has suffered from a lack of updates...sorry! So far i have only been concentrating on the fun bits that he enjoys doing.retrieving has not been an issue with him,but he has in the last few days started to try and get away with dropping at my feet, so its back to the beginning to see what i missed with that. His hunting is coming on brilliantly...he quarters naturally..but he does suffer with selective deafness on occassion when he is on a scent....just being a pup i guess i should add that i have only been using dummy/rolled sock/tennis ball to train him...Buuuuttt...my curiosity got the better of me so i took a pigeon out with us just for the scent thing...well what a bloody mess...he brought it back to me eventually, but only once he had made it oven ready..lmao He has got sit covered....he knows something good follows, praise, retrieve or the very rare treat. He is on a slip lead and walks well, but not always to heel...not pushing this one,as he is only on a lead out of safety, i dont want to drag him down with any walking discipline.he is a softer natured boy and so requires a lot more positive reinforcement at the mo,ther is time when he is older for all the training stuff. As for house training, he is sorted..untill i am away at work for extended periods and the family can sometimes take their eye of the ball,, Overall he is still very young and i am trying not to expect too much from him...so building his confidence through things he likes to do seems to be the way forward for now. i have attached some pics...hope you enjoy...they were taken on a family walk at dungeness....he also took his first dip in the shallows...had a great day! Daz
  17. My cocker..(4 months) started a fascination for doing this...i think in the end he got tired of me telling him to leave it...he still stops for the odd moment alongside a pile but i think he can still hear me in his head..and moves swiftly on...lol. i happened to mention it to the farmer, whose land we were on and he said i should consider it as a free worming regime, because his animals are all treated very regularly... Ultimately i dont think it is really doing much harm but should be discouraged where possible...and other posters are probably right in that it is the dogs way of gaining some missed nutrition... Daz
