  1. hi all, also had some problems here with the tails I rear some and also buy in, the bought in birds were the worst for tail damage I can tell you for sure it has been the weather I noticed on the wet days during the summer, birds were skulking about bored and looking for something to pick at. when its a normal summer the birds are away wandering and chasing insects, dusting etc, but when its wet they are hanging around under shelters or trees and looking to do something to fill the time and their friends tail gets it normally the tails heal and eventually catch up, but not this year, some of the damage has been irreversible. some of my birds look like grouse more than pheasants
  2. hi all, reading this topic with interest, I currently have a benelli super black eagle and it has been letting me down a bit recently and I don't shoot well with it but it's a camo 8-shot which is what I would still like to have, do any of the autos here take more than 3 shots??
  3. I am in full agreement with Camerons stance against opening the door to potential terrorists and economical immigrants. These immigrants should stay at home and fight for their country. As Malcolm Rifkind said, why are they fleeing across europe? why don't they simply go to a neighbouring country to flee the war (if they must). The messages that Germany and France have been sending out will be disastrous for Europe, I think this is just the beginning of a mass exodus from middle east countries. Just this week Cameron had to admit that the RAF killed a British born ISIS fighter, someone who was prepared to turn his back on the country that has supported him through his youth and kill his fellow brits. He was even apparently working on terror attacks in the UK, that's probably the reason that Cameron felt compelled to act and take him out. Then you see these other Syrians etc.. on the TV asking for public enquiries and the PM to be prosecuted?? I say that anyone that has a problem with Camerons decision should be put on the first plane to Syria and don't come back. Salmond and Sturgeon don't speak for all of Scotland, 56% voted to stay with the uk I wish the SNP would grow up, everything the UK government says they have to disagree with even when it makes no sense. Its just a pity that a lot of my fellow scots are to stupid to see what the SNP are up to in an effort to gain power for themselves. The British Goverment have been banging on about austerity and the need to cut public finances, how can we afford thousands of immigrants?? The Tories said they would cut net migration but the truth is the opposite??
  4. I am looking for any stealthcam advice I am trying to find a camera that has no-glo and a very quick trigger speed?
  5. anyone got any advice on worming birds? I can only get flubenvet in small sachets now they have stopped selling the 1 ton packs it seems to be getting very hard to simply worm my birds
  6. hired in a large mulcher last year it eat gorse like it wasn't there and could even handle small trees left the ground in almost perfect conditions for growing a lawn or even game crop downside was it wasn't cheap, especially when the driver went into an area I told him to avoid and he got a steel stake through his tyre changing a tyre on a large tractor and mulcher in the middle of the wood is not much fun we have a couple of swipes here that are adequate for cutting rhodis and gorse. one of them has chains and the other one has blades which are good for cutting grass and weeds but it can handle heavier stuff as well-if your careful.

  9. funny how we all have different experiences with birds wandering I got 5 white pheasants from hy-fly one got killed a few days after arriving into the release pen but the other 4 stuck together like glue and never wandered more than 500 yards from the release point (wish I could say the same for the ordinary birds) 2 have been shot during the season, but the remaining 2 are still there also a couple years ago I got 6 melanistic poults mixed in with a batch of ordinary poults they did slowly wander away but in the same tight group of 6 birds, I was able to keep track of them after the season they settled at a cottage garden feeding under the bird table approx. half mile from the original release point one hen managed to successfully rear a healthy brood of melanistic offspring and some of them are still around the same cottage to this day
  10. can give you some good advice on pen sections the best section is 10ft long by 5ft high 8ft is too short and less straightforward when you are trying to work out the size of your pen and then the size of the net to cover it for a 40ft x 40ft pen you would need 20x 8ft sections, this means your load on a trailer would be higher and it would be more work if you are knocking in a post at each join between sections - 16 posts 10ft is the optimum length, makes the job a lot easier, they are still easy to handle if you are building on your own.. 40ft x 40ft pen needs 16 sections and 12 posts 12ft long will be too long. unless you make them to a very strong spec (which will make them too heavy) they will be more prone to breakages and very ungainly when trying to build a pen. also they would not be easy to build into a 40ft x 40ft pen size, you might need to buy bigger nets or only make a 36ft x 36ft pen Height: Consider your back. don't make them shorter than 5ft. I heard that hy-fly now use 6ft high sections for the sake of health & safety and consideration for their workers who spend a lot of time inside their pens. I have some sections here that are 40 years old and they are only 2 ft high!! I think they must have been for using with Rupert broooders. There are other sections which are 3ft or 4ft high, they are ok for catchers but not for rearing, breeding or release pen sections when I bought a trailer I made sure that a 10ft x 5ft section could fit into it easily but snuggly so I could stack them and transport them without the fear of the load shifting. when I started up the shoot here I made a jig on legs for building them all and I could produce a plain section on my own in 15 mins also used to make my sections with 2 boards along the bottom but I now make them with 3 boards they are that bit stronger and give the birds another bit shelter from the wind Glad to help you with any more advice or evidence
  11. Hi Prawn, the answer is basically Yes, but it depends on yours woods and cover I have a game crop above a larch wood and the redlegs regularly fly in during a drive and are then flushed out by the beaters. Feeding today I come upon a covey feeding at a feeder in an open oak wood and they love gorse, so if you have an understorey or wood edge of gorse they love to hang around the gorse for security and warmth, they especially like flaked maize hand fed into and underneath the gors
  12. Not sure if I saw it on here, but someone mentioned that you can get a Alphchlorilose based poison called Black Pearl it should kill them after one feed Traps only have minimal success with rats they can smell your hands if you don't do something to mask all human scent and they can sense when another rat has been caught in the trap and wont go near it
  13. Yeah your funny "Fuzzypigeon" Nothing wrong with my dogging-in and pest control here Thx for your comments, have had experience with byzanty and Michigan and Kansas bluebacks. Think I am going to put down only white pheasants next year I put down a small number of white ones this year and they have never wandered from the pen!! May try to go back to more traditional blackneck strains. its great to put high birds over the guns as long as they don't land on your neighbours ground and forget to come back lol
