  1. Do Remington do a 3 inch turkey load? They sound rather devastating in the larger version. A mate of mine had been using the 3.5" turkey loads on geese and I've heard about him dropping geese at 80 plus yards stone dead.
  2. Thanks for the reply Quercus. Went out last night, it was - 5 and not breath of wind. Parked up and called for half an hour, didn't see athing whilst calling, but just as had driven back onto the lane a fox appeared in the field opposite, clearly heading for where I had been. I pulled up to give it a call and a van came along the lane and spooked it. Never mind, but it goes to show your in with a chance on most nights. Same as most things, if you don't try you will never know.
  3. Thanks sam. Just had a look at website, there isn't much they havn't got. I think it will be worth driving down to get a thousand westerns if they have them in stock.
  4. I use Express Supergame 32 gram & 36 gram 6s and occasionally 5s. I use the heavy loads due to the lack of recoil from my auto. I use 1/2 or 3/4 choke for 90% of my pigeon shooting and sometimes full choke when theres no wind. Unfortunetly supergame are a plastic wad, but as mentioned by pigeon pieman I have yet to find a fibre load that provides a pattern as good as plastic. Regarding 7 1/2 shot, I have used them in the past, but would never go back to them having shot 6s for the last 16 years. Winchester Trap 200 were available back then and they were superb I even used them for pheasants. When they were no longer available I went down to 6 shot.
  5. Any good tips for lamping foxes on still nights besides stay at home, don't seem to get any wind these days so I'm going to have a do anyway.
  6. Unfortunately I've tried all the above named shops and their all clean out of Winchesters. Are you local to this arera Ross M.
  7. Does anyone know of any gunshops or suppliers who have some winchester Super Speeds or Westerns on sale. Cant get hold of any in Lancashire it seems Winchester only import now and again these days.
  8. Thanks Sean. Squirrel is a superb colour for tying sandeel immitations, I've just tied up a clouser minnow incorparating squirrel and it looks grand. When Fishing an estuary for sea trout would you opt for a floating line or sinker or both, I suppose it would depend on the the tide strength etc.
  9. Ah well we can't have you being influenced by rude films or corrupt your mind with violent a film, it may cause you turn nasty and use your shotgun in a naughty way. :(
  10. If you are the occupier of the land you can legally take anyone shooting with you. unless your son is a prohibited person - Done over 5 years in the slammer. Can't see that somehow unless he shot somone when he was two. I had this law confirmed by the police and Basc not long back. The word occupier can be misunderstood as land owner, but I assure you that it is perfectly legal to take your son pigeon shooting providing you have the shooting rights and written permission for the land you shoot. If you require further confirmation speak to Mike Eveliegh at Basc, he's a top fella and top dog on legal malarky at B.A.S.C.
  11. Sean I meant to ask you the other day. As regards the estuary sea trout, which month would be the best to start flyfishing. I've seen plenty of of sea trout jumping when I've had a bash at the flatties on the odd occasion during the autumn months, but i would think it might be worth a crack from May/June onwards would you agree? I've spent the last few nights tying up a few flies based on sandeel immitations, using squirrel, Blue cock, teal and pearly stuff and they look rather good. Havn't as yet tied your fly due to having run out of treble hooks and a couple of other bits.
  12. Your stock is almost certainly to long. You have two options. 1. take off the existing recoil pad and replace with a thinner version. 2. Have the stock length reduced by your gunsmith or someone along those lines. Don,t put up with having a stock thats to long or you might find your shooting will not improve as it should do. Best of luck.
  13. No pigeons in my area of Lancashire either, put it down to so many people being out in the woods roost shooting on the first two saturdays of the month. Febuary never is a good month round here. Had a good first saturday, but not roost shooting, last saturday not to bad, but it isn't looking good for this weekend.
  14. I remember one day in particular, we were shooting a pasture field that contained a bit of clover, it was a frosty windless day. We shot a few at first light and then it went dead. At arround lunchtime the frost cleared off the field allowing the birds to see the decoy spread and they dropped in from miles up, every bird in the area just seemed hell bent on getting shot, this crazy performance lasted for about 90 minutes and we finished with just short of 50. Considering that half an hour before the frost cleared we nearly packed up it seemed to make the day even more enjoyable.
  15. Go for the s400 everytime there in a different league, the trigger you cant beat all the internals and the barrel are in a different league to anything falcon can offer.Plus you will get more shots from the s400,far more practical in the field.
  16. What air rifle will you be using .223. Over the past few years I have owned Air Arms xm100,Theoben Rapid seven and currently an air arms s400. All these rifles have been superb. The best one for hunting had to be the theoben Rapid 7.My prefered caliber was the flat shooting .177 which was capable of killing rabbits out to 60 yards consistently, but my current gun is a .22 which I limit myself to 40 yards on rabbits,it will kill at longer ranges, but the trajectory makes accuracy inconsistent.
  17. It unfortunately sounds like the gun you use may not be the correct fit. if the gun is the write fit you should be in line straight away, this is essential with a fast moving target such as pigeon. When you have a gun that fits try to let the pigeons get as close as you can, make it easy for yourself, dont take wild shots as this will smash what little confidence you have. Try a few more clays, perhaps in a woodland situation if thats possible. Overhead shots with trees involved sounds favourite. Start with a little lead and if thats not working continue to extend your lead until the clays break. If your shooting pigeons in a wood let them come right into the trees and be almost sat with there wings still flapping, blot them out and pull the trigger, this should do the trick.Get a few in the bag this way and your confidence will grow. If when you last shot you where using open chokes you may have been taking birds that were to far off to get the best from your pattern, this may give the impression you were on the bird, but nothing happens, thus adding to your already confused mind. Its a case of practice, don't let it get to you and enjoy learning,it won't be long befotre your bags improve.Good Luck!
  18. I used them a while back and certainly had no complaints, they will drop pigeons further than 35 yards with the right choke in as well. They are good cartridge at the right price, the only reason I use the heavier loads these days is due to my Berettas Al 391 lack of recoil.
  19. Your best sticking to favoured roosting spots and waiting. If you were to go moving arround you won't have to much chance as you will be dealing with pigeons at there most wary.If you do see a bird land nearby, but out of range let it have a moment to settle before stalking,it will then be less cautious and you should bag him. I used to wait as long as 3 minutes before attempting a stalk, doesn't sound long, but to a pigeon its a good while.
  20. The 32 gram are arround £110 per 1000 I think and the 36gram are £130 per 1000, I am in the fortunate position of getting the 36 gram at cost through a clays shooting mate.
  21. Try to locate ash trees (less twigs to hit) rather than oaks or pines.Pigeons will head to the ash trees before moving into more favourable trees at last light. Make a small very well concealed hide and keep your movement to a bare mininimum. You will probably find if there are enough birds about you will do as well if not better with your airgun due to the lack of disturbance in the woods.I had three years february roost shooting with an airgun and was well suprised with the results with several bags over 20. Good luck!
  22. Express supergame 32gram and 36gram. Awsome cartridge at the right price!
  23. Obviously you see the pigeon as a sporting bird as well as a pest, as I do. I value the pigeon as highly as a pheasant if not higher in sporting terms, at least they are native to this country,But when alls said and done a farmer sees them as a pest so therefore we come back to the bit about pest control, a pigeon dead in the eyes of most farmers is one less pigeon to be bothered by regardless of where and how it was shot.
  24. Granted you may be confident with your chosen combination, but my point was do you not feel more confident in a strong high wind with 6s instead of 7s. To be honest .223 I agree with your point but 7s are not nearly as effective on windy days as 6s or 5s. Try a box of fives on a nasty day and I bet your bag will improve.
  25. If someone baits a field they will still have to position the hide in the correct place in relation to the wind etc and also set up the correct decoy pattern as you would on any other field,so the art of decoying is not lost and also to make a good bag up you will then have to shoot straight as you would anywhere else. The fors and againsts could therefore be argued all day and night.
