  1. Why do some shooters have an attatchment on the objective lens of the scope, are they a sunshade or are they for something else ? If they are that good why don't we all have them ?
  2. Was talking with a local farmer who was saying he had had 38 rats with the terriers after moving bales and seen a few running off. I had previously sat out in the building where he was on about with a 12v interior light off a car set up, heard some but seen none. Went for a walk and stopped off for a look around the building just as it was getting dark and seen 3 rats running a breeze block wall. Went back the next night and baited six spots along the wall with peanut butter. Seen 1 shot 1. Went back two days later seen 2 shot 1, the first was on the floor in undergrowth and un-shootable. Going back soon to trim the undergrowth a little to offer more shots. Gun was a s200 in .22 with 16g AA fields, averaging 11.2 to 11.5 ft/lbs, what was interesting though was the fact that the pellets did not exit and the range was about 15 yds, due i imagine the pellets being of soft lead. Aim point was just behind shoulder, two twitches and end of. What i did notice i might add was after the first baiting, when i went back they had gnawed the breeze block to get at the peanut butter and not a trace was left. Only a clean piece of weathered block.

    Weaponology

Watched some of the weaponology programme on Quest tonight, bloody frightening some of the stuff on there. The one where the projectile is fired by electronic means, rather than firing pin was very clever, and the fire power was unbelivable. Did anyone else see it ?

    Goose egg

You were right Beretta, two pieces of cut yourself bread, toasted on one side only, buttered, I didn't want that yolk to end.

    Goose egg

    What bit is this

I don't know when but i'll get a pic up and get back to you. Thanks for replies.
  7. A couple with a small holding near me has asked me to shoot squirrels which are getting up to all sorts of mischief. I went round with the air rifle seen 2 which were un-shootable in the small woods, and after i had put the gun back in the car and was talking to the owner in the garden another 1 ran passed us, as if to say "up yours". I asked would it be ok to use a shotgun and yes was the answer. While i was out i spotted what i would describe an old drey or collapsed nest made out of twigs, i could see no leaves in the structre. What i noticed when using the binoculars on it was there was a lot of flies buzzing around the outside, Would this indicate it is in use, even if a bit battered looking ? I could take lofting poles and poke it out, but i always have seen leaves in the make up known dreys or can only twigs be used ?
  8. When you gut a rabbit and all the inards are out, what is the little white lump which is fixed up on the saddle (spine) bit, not part of the inards. It is always there on every rabbit about 8-10 mm in size. Is it some sort of gland ?
  9. Does anyone use a bought squirrel call, if so do they work and what make/model is it. Or are they rubbish ?
  10. Does anybody wear clear safety type glasses to stop their eyes watering when working towards a wind ? With about a trillion bacteria on the hands after a lap around the land and coming into contact with everything imaginable, i am a bit reluctant to wipe my eyes with the hands or even a hankie.
  11. Wherever it was hit, it's the quickest here one minute gone the next i've seen. Either a brilliant or lucky shot. Great stuff

    What do you do

Should have added to my earlier post (number 26), even better if she's sleeping on her stomach. One of the very best though, LOOK AWAY NOW IF YOU ARE A MINOR OR EASILY OFFENDED When she is in the shower, wait for her to be washing her hair so her eyes will be closed and pretend to stick your finger up her a**e. Shouting could have had you, could have had you, and then when you're both out with friends tell them what you could have done.
  13. Another one to help fly the flag

    What do you do

Same as DEVON FOX says above Another good one (again after a couple of pints when she's sleeping with her eye mask on), is to creep into the bedroom get into bed, leave it a minute to make sure she definetly is sleeping and then get on top of her as fast as you can, and start thrusting as fast as you can. "What the **** you doing ?" is so funny at the time, and the more you laugh the more annoyed she gets, and then she always says, "Ay you wait i'll get you back, but she never does.

    What do you do

Don't do it so much now (she's getting grumpier as she gets older), but some of my favourites are :- Water in the ear while she's sleeping, or, tooth cleaning floss up the nostril while she's sleeping (usually done after a couple of pints when it seems funnier), or, cold water over the top of the shower curtain. The more she shouts the funnier it seems. Childish, but still very funny.
  16. A good snap shot like that can be better than a shot where you watch the target get closer and have time to think. You'll remember that shot forever.
  17. I'm sure i've seen a Cabellas stand in gamefairs, but everytime i search for a UK cabellas website, it sends me to a USA one, where they say they are unable to send Dewey cleaning rods to the UK, why i don't know. Or where else do they sell Dewey rods in the UK ?
  18. I was thinking that as i wrote it, being granted a certificate but not understanding it fully, so that's why i thought to be a responsible shooter and ask what i didn't understand. It has never been explained to me exactly what the wording means by anyone, and i wouldn't call it basic stuff personally, as each force from what i can see has a different approach to wording. I understand that i am personally responsible for "assessing the land" if that's what you mean. Always willing to learn.
  19. At the end of my conditions bit - "in the calibres authorised by this certificate and use only in connection with the shooting of vermin or, in connection with the management of any estate, other wildlife". What does the last bit underlined mean exactly ?
  20. I have one of Lidl's night vision monocular with a built in small infra red light. I have been using this for spotting rabbits, then shooting with a Deben Mini scope mounted light. If i shone a lamp with an infra red filter or a red filter while spotting, would this improve the night vision a lot, or is the monocular got a limit to what it can do ?
  21. I have read (on varmint al's) I think, that Hornady and Remmington are all EXACTLY the same components apart from colour. All made side by side in the same factory.
  22. Cheers for the reply, that,s plenty of time, fall asleep otherwise
  23. I,ve had helicopters do a couple of circles of me, but have never "stopped". I've also had small private planes which seem to "come and have a look" at what you are doing, where a load of SG's could have brought them down. I have phoned the firearms office in the past to ask whether I can carry a photocopy of my liscence rather than the original. They said it's ok, that any vehicles parked around the area (fields or lanes etc.) would have been checked as a matter of course for being linked to gun ownership. Perhaps the Welsh plod are more sensible.
  24. A farmer has asked me to shoot some rats that are eating his barley grain which he uses to supplement cattle feed. It is stored in a building with a roof but one side is open, it has no mains electric. I've seen evidence of them, so they are there. I sat out as it got dark but they were not out and about then, so I am going to try and lamp them, I,ve got various lamps with dimmer switches which I've used on rats in the past sucessfully and a lidl night vision monocular. I want to try a static light with a bait station though rather than be "wired" to the battery and tangles. So if I rigged up a 21w orange indicator bulb to a 17A battery, how long would it last ?
  25. Gunner I'm of the same opinion as you. When I was practising the other day, the groups opened up and i found myself getting a bit despondent. Was it the new gun, me, the ammo having flyers or whatever ? It would be brilliant doing clover leafs all the time at all ranges, but for me it doesn't happen. What i decided to do was print off some targets with a 2 inch outer and a 1 inch inner, if i get them in the inner ,great, but as long as they are within the 2 inch outer i'm happy.
