  1. I had bad batch of Remmington HMR. Never had one lodge in the barrel, but some almost fell out after click, pop. In that batch I also had some real zingers, that almost destroyed the rabbits even with head shots, the percussion blowing their guts out.
  2. Definitely got be be HMR with your open land. On a similar piece of land, I started off with an air rifle, as the rabbits were uneducated and I would get up to ten a session, then they started to run at fifty yards and brought out the .22lr, now days it's HMR, or nothing. Side head shots only if you want the meat with the HMR. Totally reliable out to 120 yards, 150 and beyond on a still day. This is my CZ 452 16inch varmint review. http://www.urbanfieldsportsman.com/index.php/cz-452-varmint-17-hmr-rimfire/
  3. I've got a dodgey left leg and I use a light weight, height adjustable Eurohike hiking stick as a mono pod. I removed the screw in the top and fitted a flat V shaped ali rifle support, which I sleeved with rubber. This gives a solid support, when held out at arms length. Used with a sling it's even better. I have a bipod fitted to my HMR, but the bipod is unsuitable for long grass, or undulating ground, the mono pod bridges the gap. It only takes a minute to remove the Harris bipod.
  4. I'm with Dekers and the Magtech 7022 (Mossberg 702). Never had a jam with Eley subs, although they're not as accurate as Winchester SX subs. Had a problem with the first box of Wins, but now fired another fifty without a jam, or misfire. Ambush rabbits with a semi and you'll get two or three, while with a bolt it'll usually be one. Check out my review http://www.urbanfieldsportsman.com/index.php/magtech-7022-mossberg-7022-22-semi-automatic-rimfire/
  5. I have a CZ 452 Varmint HMR. Zeroed to 120 yards, 10mm high at a 100 yards. Bore snake with a drop of Bisley gun oil on the lead end of the snake after every shooting session, or twenty rounds in the field. Very accurate. Mine is a 16 inch barrel and did the trigger mod. Also relieved the the woodwork round the barrel, as it was touching one side. Perfect now.
  6. Received my Gun Tuff Holographic red/green dot sight today from Ramsbottoms. Very impressive, solid, black anodised ali construction, with a range of images projected onto the screen. I chose the green cross hairs to set up the sight on my CZ .177 Relum Z 11 springer. With the sight firmly clamped on the 11 mm rail, it took only minutes to dial in the cross hairs, every one of the dozen shots fired well within the 20 mm bull. Finding the target was easy, the rifle brought up and the cross hairs "put on" the bull, where the cross hairs fell within the window, that was where the pellet hit. Too cold to tempt the rats in my compost heap, so I'll have to wait for a visit to my local feral barn. http://www.urbanfieldsportsman.com/index.php/the-rifles-cz-relum-177-springer/?preview=true&preview_id=48&preview_nonce=a49cb82dcf
  7. Met Dekers for a comparison test of our Magtech 7022s firing the Winchester Super X subs I'd bought. We each fired a ten round clip, Dekers had a jam and I had a failure to eject, which surprised him, as he didn't usually get jams with Wins. This was much better than when I'd started the box last week. We then fired the remainder between us and they were all good, so maybe it was a bad batch. I set some targets at 50 yards, shooting off a gate and put four right through the centre, with the rest in the 20 mm bull, much better than my preferred Eley subs, which were in a circle10 mm wider. I also fired some Remington subs without a jam. I shall invest in another hundred Winchesters, as they seemed smoother to fire and more accurate, while with a larger hollow point should give better stopping power. http://www.urbanfieldsportsman.com/index.php/magtech-7022-mossberg-7022-22-semi-automatic-rimfire/
  8. We live and learn. At that spot I first shot them there, when they were feeding on ivy berries. That was legal as they'd fallen off the tree. Sorry guys, I don't want to cause arguments.
  9. I have shot pigeons with decoys on one of my permissions, where the corner of a field has a hedged ditch on one side and ivy covered trees on the other. I placed a couple of flock decoys in the ivy and eight on the ground facing up wind close to the ivy. It's always best with a decent west wind. I also scattered sweet corn on the ground around the decoys. I covered the inside of the ditch with my net and lay under it in cammo gear and cap. This worked well with my Webley Venom Viper .22, which I'd fitted with a extra moderator. The rifle is only rated at 12ft lb and I was shooting Bisley magnums at 25 to 35 yards. Sometimes the birds came down, wandering around, other days they wouldn't settle. I shot five in one sitting on a very windy day. That doesn't answer your immediate question, but I have repeated this with my Magtech 7022 .22lr semi, once I got the moderator sorted out, shooting from 50 to 60 yards, again down wind on a windy day. A bolt action rifle would be better as they are quieter than a semi. Check out http://www.urbanfieldsportsman.com/index.php/magtech-7022-mossberg-7022-22-semi-automatic-rimfire/
  10. Hi Dekers, I'm in Bracknell, where are you? I'd be happy to meet up.
  11. As I said before, the accuracy of the Wins was much better, but with a semi you want to know the next shot is ready. I use this rifle for walking up, or lamping with multi targets. I'll probably use these up on some short range stake outs. These didn't seem sticky, in fact thought they were dry compared to the Eleys.
  12. I've been using my old .177 Relum springer for close range pigeon shooting in barns over open sights, but find that some times I can't see the sights due to the low light (and my old age). I've been thinking of buying a cheap (£20) red dot sight. The reviews seem mixed. Max range will be twenty yards. Advice please.
  13. Cheers guys. Maybe I'll see if I can trade the other fifty Winchesters for some CCIs. They'd be great in a bolt action, but don't have one in .22lr. Must get something sorted, as I saw plenty of rabbits moving today.
  14. Being unable find a local dealer who has a stock of Eley .22 subsonics, I opted to try the Winchester Super X subs in my Magtech 7022 semi auto today. With two ten round clips loaded with the last of my Eleys, I set up two side by side targets at 50 yards away from my shooting position, a fallen tree that gives me a convenient horizontal rest for the rifle and a comfortable seat. The Magtech is already zeroed for 50 yards and taking single shots, the Eleys as expected all cycled perfectly, with eight punching through the 20 mm dia bull, one just outside to the lower right and the other lower still, knicking the 45mm dia ring. These strays were probably down to me pulling the shots, but pretty good for this rifle. Using the now empty magazine, I loaded up with the Winchesters and cocked the action before firing the first shot. The report was slightly louder than the Eleys, but the bullet entered the new target dead centre. Next shot the bullet jammed. it was only half way out of the magazine and wedged in place. I pulled back the action and took the bullet out, the nose being flattened on the upper side, discarding it. I pulled back and cocked the action, the bullet fired and placed next to the first, but the spent case did not eject. On this magazine, only two bullets cycled properly. Those shots that reached the target all punched inside the 20 mm. I changed to the other full Eley magazine and all ten fired with similar accuracy as before, not as accurate as the Winchesters, but all 50 yard kill shots. I reloaded this mag with the Winchesters, gaining one jam and several miscycles, three consecutive shots being the best. Once again the accuracy could not be faulted. With the Eleys, the last shot holds open the action, while the Winchesters failed to do this on both mags. The Eley subs gave more recoil despite the 1030 ft/sec velocity, but always recycle. The Winchesters seemed smoother, but didn't recycle despite their 1065 ft/sec velocity. Any ideas?
  15. He came out with CCI, Remmington and Winchester subs. Has plenty of Wins. Nice little shop. A bit posh, but well stocked for all shooting. Air pistols, rifles to shot guns and plenty of bits and pieces to poke around. Enjoy.
  16. Got some Winchester SX subs at Emmet Stone in Little Marlow. Nice little shop in a farm complex., didn't know it was there. Bought a 100 for £10. Took my wife for the ride and it cost me more in the farmshop! Thanks again for the info. i'll do some side by side targets next week, if we get some decent weather.
  17. I was at Sheephouse the other week. Rob said he'd be stocking Eley subs this year. He didn't try to sell me any Wins, but then that's him, not a high pressure salesman. I'll have a phone around. Cheers.
  18. Thanks for the info Dekers. Where do you get your Winchester subs? I'm east of Reading.
  19. I've just fitted a sling to my Magtech http://www.urbanfieldsportsman.com/index.php/improved-magtech-7022-field-test/ for ease of carrying with a shooting monopod, but also to give front end support when shooting to hand. It worked a treat. I've also improved the trigger pull by using valve grinding paste on the trigger hammer and catch mechanism, which has smoothed down the rough sliding surfaces.
  20. I'm looking for a Mossberg Hush power, for pigeons, what's better a 410, or 20. Mostly for roosters, got no arable.
  21. Hi Dekkers, I can't get any Eley subs locally and am just finishing off 500. I know these work in my Magtech. What make were you using at Bisley?
  22. I'm down to my last fifty of five hundred .22 Eley subs, bought before I moved to Bracknell. They work a treat in my Magtech 7022 (Mossberg 702) semi auto. Can't find a stockist locally. Has anyone tried CCIs in this rifle?
  23. Did you check your moderator? Mine came loose and began deflecting the bullets all over. Another time I had a duff box of Remmi HMR that had high and low loads. The trouble with the HMR is that you expect point and shoot.every time.
  24. This week was a real improvement. Maybe because it was stick float fishing on the Wensum. Some good conditioned roach and chub caught, and also shots of the float going under. Also comment on the fact that kids don't get a chance to fish anymore, due to the shortage of free stretches. Quote MultiQuote Edit
