  1. I run the boresnake through mine after every trip, even after a few shots. Shot some targets last week and had touching holes at a hundred yards.
  2. I had similar problems with a batch of Remingtons, click-bangs, then a couple stuck in the barrel, all with split necks. http://www.urbanfieldsportsman.com/index.php/17-hmr-bullets-jammed-in-the-barrel-on-cz452-rifle-with-remington-ammo/ I checked the remainder and found more, so stopped using them. They could have been quite old from the back of the cabinet. The blue tip Hornady after that were fine, also the reds. Each new batch of 50 I've checked, have been fine so far.
  3. A footnote to this thread. I've just started drinking the cider I made in October 2012. I tried some last summer, it was good, but it has now matured into the best yet. This is the advantage of making a decent amount each year, you have time to wait for it to mature. My 2013 cider is an investment for 2015. My cider blog :http://www.urbanfieldsportsman.com/index.php/cider-bottled/
  4. I'm with Dekers on the Magtech. Ten shot magazine. Lightweight. Easy to take down and clean. Rugged little rifle. With Eley, or RWS subs, works everytime. My review : http://www.urbanfieldsportsman.com/index.php/magtech-7022-mossberg-7022-22-semi-automatic-rimfire/
  5. My last outings had drawn a blank over the past few weeks, with much of the land sodden, but after a couple of dry days, there were plenty of rabbits about again. I didn't see any kittens, just big adults. Hope the snow keeps off.
  6. I shot a couple of milky doe rabbits yesterday. The wet weather may have put me off shooting, but the rabbits have been busy. Anyone else had any yet?
  7. When I got a new permission recently, that was crawling with rabbits, I phoned 4 local butchers and got 3 new customers. They want them head shot and in fur, paunched. I was shifting 30 to 40 a week at £2 each. Most butchers are dead keen to buy wild rabbit these days. They are back in fashion.
  8. Heres a blast from the past, Webley Viper Venom. My review : http://www.urbanfieldsportsman.com/index.php/rifle-weblet-viper-venom-22-carbine-pcp/ Had mine eight years. Shot hundreds of rabbits with it, plus rats, pigeons and squirrels. Light weight carbine, two shot .22. Still a few around S/H. No problems.
  9. The rabbits in the Somerset Levels would have to be to Olympic standard. Glad none of my permissions are near there.
  10. The small Hampshire syndicate river I fish, has a natural head of brown trout, which has been stocked for at least a hundred tears, to replenish those fish taken by anglers. The wild fish breed in the river and we have a wide variety of fish spot patterns, from multi spotted to those with just a few red spots, where they have interbred over the many years. To say that the EA wish to preserve a pure breed in our river, I say they are at least a hundred years too late. All our fish are now catch and release, but the management stock every year with triploids up to two pounds, which take over the good lies, pushing out the wild fish. Likewise because these triploids do not breed, they feed during the natural spawning period, which must mean at some time they will be eating wild trout spawn, likewise more likely to eat young trout. Like the Somerset Levels, I think this is more wonkey thinking from the EA. This was one of the trout I caught last year, that had no place in our little river. 11. Seeing the flooding widespread flooding throughout the south and the west, what is happening to all the rabbits, foxes and deer. On one of my low lying permissions, the rabbits seem to have moved to higher ground. How long can they stay underground?
  12. Hi Bantam boy. You build a small fire on the grill plate, with charcoal, then when it's dying back put soaked chippings on the top. I use Hickory chips from a garden centre, but a friend uses oak chips, another thinks apple is best. Put the cover on the chimney to keep the smoke thick. Put more on to keep the smoke going. Soak the chips for an hour.
  13. I have a Career 707 .22 carbine, which I bought secondhand for £300 several years ago and is running at 28 lb on full power, but can be turned down to close to the legal limit on the thumb wheel. It has an air pressure gauge and a ten shot magazine (seven for Bisley Magnums). These are still around secondhand and easily maintained with basic tools. It's extremely accurate out to 50 yards and has paid for it'self twice over. Having a .22lr, I don't use it enough these days. This was my last outing with it. http://www.urbanfieldsportsman.com/index.php/shin-sung-career-707-22-carbine-rabbit-clearance/
  14. You could try my recipe for rabbit loins http://www.urbanfieldsportsman.com/index.php/baked-rabbit-loins-in-pesto-and-bacon-parcels/ . Obviously the loins are longer, but a hare will give two helpings. If you don't like your meat too gamey, then soak overnight in salted water. As with rabbit, it is important to remove the thick "skin" across the back. I slide a knife under this skin with the thick part of the blade parallel to the spine, working the cutting edge to the side, having removed the belly flesh as high as possible first. Repeat for the other side and cut off with a knife, or scissors. If the skin is left on (I did it once) it cooks tougher than leather. You can't chew it, or cut it. Mine are cooked slowly wrapped in bacon, in foil and are tender.
  15. Knowing that many shooters are also anglers, I thought this may be of interest. Having got a rainbow trout out of the freezer to bake this week, I saw a post here, on a home made cold smoker, which made me change my mind on the baking and to hot smoke it in my patio chimenea instead. I've done this many times during the summer months with fresh caught rainbows, but this was the first attempt with a freezer fish, during February. As you can see from the lower pic, the trout turned out perfectly and I can assure you it's sweet and tasty, just in time for my tea tonight. In the summer I usually give the trout half an hour, but today I gave it an hour, as the air drawn into the chimnea was cooler. This was my original blog post ; http://www.urbanfieldsportsman.com/index.php/hot-smoked-trout-in-a-chimenea/ I have not tried smoking meat, but feel this method would adapt well for sliced pigeon breasts. Many people have chimeneas, in fact, one of my fishing mates bought his, after tasting my smoked trout and it's well worth a try.
  16. Give Accupel flat heads a try. They are a good stopper. I use Bisley Magnums in my .22s and would be my second choice in .177.
  17. Happened to me twice on the same box of Remingtons with my CZ452. Both cases were split. I found another four unfired rounds, also with splits. I didn't take any chances with the rest of the box. Had no problems with red and blue tipped Hornady. The CZ is still deadly accurate.
  18. I had eight permissions covering South Bucks and Berkshire, until a couple of months ago and would have said that numbers were down, but I think that was because I kept shooting them. I restarted an old permission and got another three this autumn and have been averaging six, or seven a visit on these new areas, only shooting during the afternoon. This was last week during the afternoon, following a two hour stake out on a hill overlooking a farm, shooting out to 120 yards with my CZ452 .17HMR. If you check out my blog post http://www.urbanfieldsportsman.com/index.php/cz452-17-hmr-excells-at-long-range-sniping/ . In the photo of the farm, you can see a small paddock. I shot a dozen rabbits in there at close range using my Magtech 7022 .22lr semi auto, when I first started on this permission. Now I have to use the HMR. In the blog I show some of the damage the rabbits have done.

    Career leak

Suddenly we have a series of leaking Career 707's. My latest was in the pressure gauge about a year ago, but not seen a drop since. The same small O rings. Great rifle.
  20. I have a Career 707 .22 carbine. I have renewed most of my seals on my rifle at some time and got these from my local plumbers shop, who had trays of them. The pellet probe seals are quite small diameter, but someone like Simply Bearings UK carry stocks of all sizes for little money. http://simplybearings.co.uk/shop/Seals-O+Ring+Seals/c19_4501/index.html?gclid=CIvdtLyv-boCFSKWtAodhEkA3g Most towns have a bearing company in their midst with a trade counter, who will be happy to measure your components to come up with the right O Ring. If you have a sample all the better. I'm still shooting with mine after many years of use (and misuse). This was my latest outing: http://www.urbanfieldsportsman.com/index.php/shin-sung-career-707-22-carbine-rabbit-clearance/ Good Luck. PM me if you have any trouble getting them and I'll try down South for you. Ken
  21. Just made another dozen rabbit, pigeon and chorizo pasties and used the last of my pigeon breasts. http://www.urbanfieldsportsman.com/index.php/rabbit-and-pigeon-pasty-with-chorizo/ If I don't get any more woodies, I think I'll try just rabbit and black pudding minced together, sounds tasty. I always cook my meat in the pasty.
  22. I use chorizo in my rabbit burgers and pasties, it gives a richer flavour. http://www.urbanfieldsportsman.com/index.php/rabbit-and-pigeon-pasty-with-chorizo/ http://www.urbanfieldsportsman.com/index.php/bunny-burgers-with-chorizo/
  23. I always wee them and paunch them in the field ready for the butcher's next day. If I'm taking them for myself, I skin and halve them in the field. The foxes and kites do the rest.
  24. It's a good active site. Welcome.
  25. I'm still shooting seven, or eight a session in the last couple of hours of light on my permissions in Berks and South Bucks. All big adults, no juveniles. No small ones seem to be about. I've had no signs of mixy yet either.
