I just stick things in the ground and if they grow then all well and good. I do have some honeysuckle growing a bit wild in a corner near the bird feeders and the finches and robins love it to hop around on. The tits and starlings seem to prefer our smoke bush for some reason. Try going for a walk and taking some cuttings, then stick some rooting powder on the cut end and stick it in the earth. Old teabags are great for creating moist soil and helping combat clay.
