  1. OK - great advice thank you. Like you say, I'll dab some geese on it and leave well alone. There is - what does the screw do btw?
  2. OK, great - so nothing to worry about in and of itself? Nothing to worry about structural or re water ingress?
  3. Thanks for the replies - I've just noticed that when looking at the photos, it looks like it's a blob of something, but when you have the barrels in front of you that isn't the case - it's an absence / void that look to have been smoothed over. When I was cleaning it yesterday, I noticed what looked like a blob of hardened greese in the area inside the blue circle, so I grabbed a toothpick to remove it - but it wasn't geese, and quite quickly a hole started to appear, and so I stopped. I took the view that if a toothpick could easily remove it, it probably wasn't doing a great deal anyway, but still... The gun locks up fine and is solid - it also has a third bite. No movement where there shouldn't be. I've had the gun for years and it's not had any problems - just a bit confused.
  4. Hi All, Can anyone tell me what is going on here? Is that the solder from the barrel lump coming away?
  5. I agree - there's a world of difference between a 1930's Morgan and a modern Ford. And the modern car has all sorts of benefits, but I'd still rather have the Morgan.
  6. Fingers crossed with some time and effort I should be able to pick it up Closer to the gun shop? Or further away?
  7. It's shocking really, when you think about it - the amount of work that must go into makeing one
  8. Cheers, that's more or less what I've been doing Thanks - good advice There's a very understanding and long suffering gunsmith about 15 mins away. I'm something of a perfectionist (which is just a nicer way of saying 'pedant') - which comes in as a very useful thing for my work, but is not so useful re things like shooting / fishing - as it just leads to overthinking and worrying about some minor mark or scratch.... Thanks for that - as a feared, it's more a genuine skill than a knack. I will keep all of those in mind in the future
  9. I recently took a gun in to get the barells checked for marks (pitting / scoring) and was surprised to be told that there was a dent in them. I struggled to see it even when it was pointed out - so I was wondering, is there a knack to it? Like one of those 3-D puzzle books?
  10. After a long time watching this thread, here are my contributions. I've got a couple of other plainer English / Scottish guns, but these are the nice ones (screen shots from my Instagram account) In no particular order - Pair of AYA no.2's Cogswell and Harrison non ejector James Crockart (nearly) best boxlock
  11. Leave it more than a couple of days - if it ever gets to Court, you will earn points by having allowed them 'reasonable' time to reply. Acting reasonably at all times is very important. 'Reasonable' length of time in a legal context is normally one to two weeks for this sort of thing. Also, if they don't reply to the first letter, don't go straight in with a LBA (letter before action) - keep the normal correspondence going. The next stage is normally recorded delivery* - obviously keep all receipts and copies of letters. Print them out in triplicate and start makeing them into bundles (one for you, one for the other side, one for the court) - again, it will save you a lot of time and effort if it does go to Court, and it takes no time to do as you go along. *Judges tend to be under quite a lot of pressure - they don't enjoy having their time wasted by spurious litigation. If something can be worked out before court, it should be - and evidence of efforts to do so will be look on favourably.
  12. Politicaly it's not needless, and was already coming down the pipes, regardless of BASC or anyone else. There's a sea-change in public option regarding the environment, and dumping tonnes of lead all over the place isn't going to be viewed as acceptable much longer, if it even still is. To use a metaphor I have previously- you can try and sail against the tide and either get nowhere, or pushed somewhere you don't want to be, or you can go with it, and try and chart the best possible course given the situation. I'm wagering BASC are trying to do the latter - and for what it's worth, they have my support. Anyway, I've had my say about the lead ban on this forum - if you like you can search my old posts - but I'm not getting drawn into it again.
  13. Apart one or two negative comments I have made on here about BASC on particular issues (significantly outweighed by the supportive comments I've made, I would like to think), my only negative experience of them specifically revolved around one bearded man on the BASC stall at a game fair. I've spoken to Connor on one or two occasions and he's been nothing but helpful - and the same goes for his colleagues (with the exception of the one with the beard). So anyway, I take my hat off to BASC (including, begrudgingly, the man with the beard) - keep up the good work
  14. The report I read last night claimed it took place in a field of silage - whatever that is. I see the guardians now corrected that, but - and I know this seems like nitpicking when someone has tragically lost their life - it really doesn't instill confidence for accurate reporting around rural matters...
  15. I've not used it re salt water, but that pro ferrum stuff is miraculous for cleaning barrels, and isn't supposed to damage woodwork either. The cans also seems to last a while, which is good considering the price.
  16. I did think about a net and poles, but I was worried it might stand out in an otherwise flat, grassy field. The lay out blind might be good though 👍 👍 cheers - that's the sort of thing I was hoping to hear. Good call - thank 👍 👍 I've got a never-ending supply of wood pallets. Thanks - I'll look into those. They sound great. 👍 cheers - good to know. I can see the local newspaper headlines now - 'Yeti sighted in Cheshire'
  17. Most of my flight ponds seem to have slightly too many mature trees around them - so you see a silhouette of a duck for a second and then you loose it. In a way this is a blessing, because everyone appreciates trees - however, its not so great shooting wise. But, I have got one dew pond that has no trees anywhere near it - and its on the edge of a seven acre marsh. I did make a pallet hide a few years ago, but that was vandalised - so I'm reluctant to put up another and draw attention from anyone who wants to interfere. So - I was thinking, can I get away with a portable / net hide, or can I just stand very still? I'm sure I've done the latter once in a flooded feild somewhere in Somerset - but it was about 10 years ago and I'm rather hazy on the details, such as if there were tall hedges nearby (which in my current case there aren't) All answers appreciated, Peter
  18. https://www.thetimes.co.uk/article/defra-shooting-rethink-offers-lifeline-to-endangered-woodcock-rjpq696n7 In todays times by the look of it (I don't subscribe, but may pop out and buy a paper later). Quite an alarming headline, but not having read the artical, I will reserve judgement.
  19. That does sound like a great piece of kit
  20. Good point - I will ask some freinds. I hadn't thought of that strangly 👍 The counting is a big thing for me - I would like to get some accurate'ish numbers on all kinds of wild game. Ducks, snipe, hares, deer - the whole lot really. It would also come in helpful when my soay sheep escape again.....
  21. Cheers, that's good to know 👍 👍 Thanks, I'll take a look 👍
