  4. I had a similar problem with a VW Golf MK2. I know its a different animal to your discovery but, as I say my Golfs lights seemed to work some days and not others . The full beam worked all the time, even with the ignition off by pulling back on the indicator arm. I tried to resolve the problem over several weeks, I checked the wiring, replaced the light switch, replaced a relay inside the fuse box. I had no success, in fact the situation got worse as even when the lights were on they developed the trick of going out for several second or minutes. I was able to overcome the lights going out by pulling back on the indicator arm and using main beam. After all my attempts of a self fix, I took it to an auto electrician. The problem was traced down to a worn and faulty ignition barrel, total cost of the repair was an eye watering £270 (at the time this was one and a half weeks wage!).
  5. I forgot to mention about a friend of mine. He has a Browning Silver semi-auto, this is a good looking gun. He's had this from new for a number of years. In the time he's owned it, he claims never to have really cleaned it and its never once jammed.
  6. Dr Lecter, have you considered a Hatsan semi auto? I bought a brand new Hatsan pump action this year from Kirklees guns, I had change from £300, several shims in the box along with a high- viz bead foresight, a full set of chokes and a 3 year warranty! I had my doubts about the quality and reliability but, I have to say its awesome. I can't comment on the semi auto's however, no doubt it'll be as good as the pump action. Regarding semi auto's, I have a Webley & Scott 810, I bought this second hand as a rough gun. The condition was immaculate and having taken it to my local clay shoot I decided it was far too good for dragging it over walls, pulling through fences etc. In my opinion, second hand W&S 810's give good value. My only complaint re this gun was the magazine tube rusts/pits if you don't keep an eye on it.
  7. I tried with Bio-diesel from a reputable supplier a couple of years back, i have a volvo with a D5 diesel engine. The supplier advised me to change my fuel filters if it ran lumpy or certainly after 1000 miles - It didn't run lumpy and it didn't get to 1000 miles on bio diesel. September 2012 i was using a 50% mix. It was a real pain pouring it from a 25 litre drum into my car, i used a big funnel with a flexible neck. I found the process very messy too. As the weather got colder i reduced the mix to 25% bio, 75% pump diesel. At the time i was paying 1.25 ltr for Bio, pump diesel was 10 or 11 pence per litre more expensive. One of my work colleagues who i car share with was aware of what i was doing and he thought i was insane. I'll get to the point of my experiance with bio-diesel. Myself and two work colleagues had been at work and we had finnished at 02:30am, that day i was the driver. As i drove along a flat stretch of road the car spluttered and began to slow off and eventually stopped. I fired it up again and it ran for for a couple of hundred feet before it stopped again. I did the stop start thing for about half a mile until my car refused to start. I had my 2 work colleagues push my 2 tonne Volvo a couple hundred feet to a petrol station fourcourt, they told me it was hardwork! Another work colleague was contacted and he went out of his way at 3:30am to get us home. The following day, i attended my car and had the AA attended. When i mentioned Bio diesel, he said he dealt with a dozen bio diesel disasters each month. The car was recovered to a friends garage who were diesel specilists. I was told my cost saving exercise might result it me needing new injectors. My tank was drained (it was almost full, approx £90!) and the car returned to me running on paffafin ( this was to assist in cleansing). The garage bill and a new tank of diesel cost me £300, just before Christmas - I was the turkey that year! My car runs fine now but, i had it explained that Bio diesel and common rail diesel engines are not a good mix. Am told some engines are good on Bio, but not Volvo Common rail.
  8. If it's any help, my 2 stroke strimmer engine runs 90% petrol, 10% 2stroke oil.

  10. I think with £35k a sensible option would be two cars. 1st an E39 BMW B10 Alpina, a real wolf in sheeps clothing and would only cost £6k. A fraction slower to 60mph than an M5, same top speed 155mph -almost supercar performance at Mondeo/Vectra pricing. The Alpina may well become an apreciating classic as they are released in limited numbers. 2nd a good TD5 Discovery for the days when the weathers bad or you plan to go off the beaten track. Invest the change, probably £25k on the stock market and the annual dividends would pay for would cover the up keep of the motors.
  11. Thanks SirDread, another glowing report for a Discovery 2. I'm wanting to settle on a vehicle that i'll stick with for a few years, the ability to do most service work myself and the tinkering that i could do with a Discovery would facilitate this. Its somthing for me to look forward to, years ago i would service and maintain my own Nova and Golf GTi and they were jobs i'd enjoy. My wife is thinking am having a mid life crisis!
  12. Thanks for that Arley, do you reckon you'll go back to a TD5? The Discovery 3 got a great review by Jeremy Clarkson when he drove it to the top of the mountain. It seems to me like there's a lot of computers talking to each other and associated components to enable it to perform its miracles, this puts me off the leap to the Discovery 3. I've read that the later Discovery 3's and the new 4's are flawless but, their reliability comes with a cost of a footballers bank balance and road tax bill to laugh at! Having said that, if I was without the financial responsibilities of a family and mortgage I'd have a new one.
  13. Thanks guys for your reassurance re the Discovery. Am currently flipping between Ebay, Autotrader and here. With some luck I'll be changing to a Discovery this summer. I'll be going for the cloth seat option as the mother in law has struggled on the leather seats of the Volvo sliding about at the slightest change in direction although, she's provided great entertainment for the kids if we didn't tether her down tight!
  14. Thanks for your reply Aga Man. One of the reasons behind the need for my XC90 was to lug my two young kids, wife and springer spaniel about the country in a bit of comfort with the added safety. As i mentioned earlier on i did consider the Discovery 2 years ago but, let folk talk me out of the idea. My minds made up now, I'll be putting a fresh MOT on the Volvo next week and changing it for a Discovery at the earliest opportunity. I just need to get the wife to agree with my plans, hopefully she'll see that the maintenance should work out cheaper than the Volvo.
