Scope choice

Ok, I'll explain further.

I am and S & B man, I am in the next year planning on moving up in rifle calibre and I've been looking out for a second hand S & B 8x56 going cheap. I have been offered a Swarovski 8x50 at money matching that of a S&B 8x56.

I am not convinced that the Swaro is not 8x56 but the person has said 8x50... So that's what I have to go on.

This scope would preferably be going on a .243 or .270 if that helps anyone!

Mindful of Mung's comment that you're nor comparing apples with apples, bear in mind that Swaro scopes are usually of much lighter than construction than S&B. Swaro makes both an 8x50 and 8x56. I would go for 8x56 every time, on the basis that that lens configuration gives the optimum 7mm exit pupil for low-light shooting.

glensman just a we quick question do you have to pass 1 of the test for deer shooting before the psni will grant a .243

Yeah they wont look at anything over 22-250 without DSC 1... Hence me having to do it. A fella in dungannon was lookin to sell me a Tikka T3 Stainless in .243 with T8 for buttons this time last year, but I couldn't afford to do the DSC. The course is in Enniskillen and about £365.

I was looking into it there now, I was hoping someone like Baldrick would give me some advice!

I assume this Swaro is a PH and going by ratings online a S&B 8x56 may be the superior scope... I'm not at all sure :good:

10 - Swarovski Z6, Zeiss Victory

9 - Kahles C - CL & CSX, Schmidt & Bender

8 - Kahles KX, U.S. Optics, Swarovski PH & American, X.O.T.I.C., Zeiss Classic

The 1"-tubed Swarovski AV series is branded 'PH' for the American market, I believe. The SWFA comparison chart you've looked at isn't relevant to the Swarovski 'PF' 30mm-tubed range of scopes.

I will always buy Zeiss Victory from now on. They are very solidly built and Zeiss offers superb aftercare. I have both S&B and Swarovski scopes, and all have subtle differences in their optical qualities and features, e.g. adjustment turrets. I find that Zeiss lenses perform best after dark, and importantly for me (as most of my shooting is done deep in broadleaved woodland), Zeiss glass seem to offer the best contrast between greens and browns. I've also been and done the Kahles and Docter thing, but I didn't like them as much as Zeiss.

I've heard great things about Zeiss and I was saying to myself that I would save the pennies and try to get a second hand S & B or Zeiss variable as a .270 (which I wont have until next season) will have a fair bit of range.

The only thing that prompted this whole this is that I think I can get the Swaro for about £300. But last week I could have had a S&B 8x56 for £320 so I was wondering was the Swaro any better than the S&B? If not I'll let someone else have it.

Although the thought crossed my mind to sell my S&B 6x42 German and replace it with the Swaro, but I would need new mounts etc etc. and by that style of logic I should have bought the 8x56 S&B!!

A bit of a ramble; I'm Very tired :good:

Have you looked through both scopes? If so, just buy the one that appears clearest. There is so little difference between Swarovski and S&B at that level that there's little point fussing.

If the Swarovski (whether it's an 8x50 or 8x56) has a 30mm tube and is in fair/good condition, I would say it's underpriced at £300.

IF YOU DECIED AGAINST THE SWARO CAN YOU PUT ME IN TOUCH I AM LOOKING FOR ONE AT THAT PRICE

DOC

I'll PM you now.

Decide frig it. My other 2 scopes are S&B when I go to buy a third (and I'm in no hurry) I'll try to hold out for a Schmidt or Zeiss variable.

Cheers for the advise lads. I think it's under-priced but someone else will get more value from it.
