Topgunners
Saturday I went out to clock some bean fields that had been recently drilled with wheat, and found a fair few pigeons and crows that were walkng about picking up the odd bean that had been turned over on top of the soil. With hardly any wind about, the flight lines were varied and birds were dropping in from all directions. I eventually set up between 2 trees along the hedgerow and put out the usual 2 deek patterns. This time I had the crow deeks straight out in front of the hide and the pigeons out to my left. The session was slow but steady and I eventually ended up with 18 blackies and 14 pigeons. Had to pack up midday and take my grandson to the fairground. Sunday I got up about 4.00am and was out and on my patch by 5.00am as I was looking for a couple of foxes that the farmer had told me had seen about. When I arrived I was greeted with a nice blanket of FOG and my vision was limited to about 200yards. I sat up on top of a hill with the .243 ready. Had a few scans with the night vision monocular scope until it started to get light but saw no movement at all from "Basil". Just after it got light I heard the honking from a distance and then a flock of about 70 geese flew over my head and circled a couple of times,; then dropped into a stubble field about 400yards away. Not long after, they were joined by about 30 ducks. I sat watching for another hour or so then left to go looking for some pigeons. Geese I eventually found a few descending on a new drilled field of wheat and set up on the corner of a hedgerow that jutted out into the field. The birds were not deccoying very well but the flight line was directly overhead and I had some cracking high shots as the birds flew past me. A while later as I was pouring a coffee I looked up and saw a Jay just taking off from the pattern of crow deeks and promptly dropped it. My first Jay this year. Lovely looking bird but still a pest to the farmers. Mid afternoon I got a phone call from a mate asking me if he could pop along with his rifles to have a go at some rabbits. I told him to come and join me and try his luck. He arrived about an hour later and went walkabouts for a while but only got a couple. He then came over to me and asked for a few dead birds he could use for decoys as he was going to lay down with his rifle in another field and have a go. I gave him a dozen to work with. Picked up about 5.00pm and ended up with 10 rooks, 8 jackdaws, 29 Pigeons and 1 Jay. I then sat watching my mate for a while, who was sniping the pigeons with his rifle and eventually he ended up with 19 birds. I also spotted 4 Robins flitting along the hedgerow. Is this a sign of Winter just around the corner? I have a had a great week's holiday shooting but now it's back to work today. Cranfield
A varied weekend indeed. Jays are getting quite a rarity in my area, I only see one or two a year. There is certainly a touch of Autumn in the mornings and evenings round here and the trees are turning colour. We went to Bagington near Coventry yesterday and drove into that fog along the M45, it was dull there all day with just a few sunny spells. I did see quite a few pigeons and blackies along the A45/M45, they seemed to be landing on drillings.

You could have had an hour or 2 on the pigeons or even bagged a goose or duck. Next time eh? Letting all those lovely people see the delectable Bramble in all her glory. Next year I might leave her at home.
