mls77
I'm a rough shooter, pigeon ,bunny bashing and lucky enough to get invited on a couple of driven shoots one or twice a year as well. But i have a clay shoot less than half a mile up the road from where i live. I would like to give clay shooting a go but have no idea how to go about it. any advice much appreciated. Thanks
Blunderbuss
Go and ask? Most clay shoots are friendly and welcoming. I note you're an experienced live quarry shooter and presumably SGC holder, so they will probably be OK with you cracking on by yourself. If you are unsure of procedure/protocol either ask them to walk you round or better still book a short lesson. A lesson will ensure you are totally happy with what the ground expects in terms of safety, conduct, etc. It will also improve your rough shooting Good luck. poontang
What's the name of the shoot? There may be someone on here who has been and can tell you what to expect. There are basically two types of shoot, one being the more informal 'hay bale' type shoot, and then there's the more formal shooting grounds. At both safety will be of paramount importance. You're no doubt a safe shot but you have to be SEEN to be safe at a clay ground, as there'll be plenty of other folk about, unlike in a pigeon hide. No need to get camo'd up, just wear something comfortable, safety glasses and ear defenders are a must at CPSA registered grounds and sensible at all others. Take a bag of some type with you to keep your cartridges/chokes etc. in. Most clay grounds will only allow up to 28g cartridges and you'll probably be best to use 7 1/2's or 8's. Also check to see if the ground allows plasic wads. The clays are certainly different to live quarry shooting but just as challenging. As already stated clay shooters are a friendly bunch and will no doubt show you around and answer any questions. Just pay your money, shoot and enjoy yourself. jasper3
Hi MLS I took myself off to a local clay club here in Devon, I was asked by a member on here to come along.. the greeting was fantastic ..and the members did everything to help me inc a free lesson..they even lent me a gun... the club closes down over winter ..but i will be joining it next year without doubt.... the lads have even offered to take me out for a bit of rough shooting over winter........ when i went to the club..they let me shoot down the line..so i could get a basic idea......I loved it good luck with it..you will enjoy john
