d17 len
Hi as you have probably read before, savings on 12 gauge are nominal if any.Small savings are made on smaller gauges and also on heavy loads and fowling shells. If you shop round you can get better deals on componants, european powders are cheaper than american powders ,so compare before you buy! Having said that ,being fairly new to reloading i can tell you there is no better feeling than dropping a woodie stone dead with a shell you have loaded yourself!! hawkeye
you should have a word with kdubya if you think there is no savings by reloading your own.. We have it down to about £75 per 1000...

reddan
We only have to buy primers and powder and wads KW myself and mag357 bought a shot maker between us from one of the lads on here and make our own shot...that is the biggest expense... I have looked into it several times and you are right it is the cost of the shot that makes it uneconomical. Where do you get you base lead from? And do you add any hardening? Still really keen on having a go so interested. Did you buy that shot machine that was on here a while ago? looked like it dropped molten lead into bowls of water/oil. hawkeye
Just noticed this sorry to not reply sooner.. We have had loads of lead given by mates who are roofers and plumbers. We melt down to make ingots and we add printer type to harden it ( THIS HAS ANTONIMY IN IT )we have made up to date around about 80 kilo's of size 6 shot.. :( shot maker That could have been the one but oil/water is not used.. reddan
Do you get perfectly round shot? I would have thought you would end up with tear drop shaped shot, I now have an image of you filing the point off each one. Have you thought about supplying it to others (me)? hawkeye
Mag357 cut open a few gamebore cartridges and put the shot in a plastic container...... then he put the same amount of home made shot in another container and it was hard to tell the difference an RFD mate that we showed it to has reloaded for donkeys years said he would use it no problem... this is the first lot we made looks OK to me....Kdubya took the pics... http://forums.pigeonwatch.co.uk/forums/ind...howtopic=101293 Edited November 15, 2009 by hawkeye
