Cosd
We have a small field at one corner of a farm we shoot which is narrow and not very long. Along the long side runs a country road, which turns and runs along the short side of the field as well. Bearing in mind you need to be 50 yards from the centre of the road, shooting back toward the fields and away from the road isn't really an option. I was arguing with one of my mates when I said we couldn't really shoot that particular field because of the road. Without pacing it out I'd say the field is about 200 - 250 yards wide. Would you shoot toward a road at that sort of distance, because I wouldn't feel comfortable.
Dunkield
IIRC it is 50 feet not 50 yards if the helps. An no, I wouldn't shoot towards a road at 200 ish yards.
Spaniel
I think you could find that some of the pellets could reach that distance and could fall on someone walking or driving along the road....I wouldnt bother and i would not want any hassel because of it IMO
humperdingle
I'd say that's cutting it a bit fine. Shot can easily travel that distance with a bit of wind behind it.
COACH
As a qualified CPSA safety officer I would not shoot this ground as you need at least 275m/300yds for the shot fall out area. Bigger shot such as 3/4s can travel even further with a strong wind. The shot could land on someone else's land which is ok if you have permission from that person. Watch out for public foot paths as well don`t shoot in there direction or over them. As you have roads on two sides, someone may report you and you could end up with an armed response team shouting at you with a helicopter hovering overhead and your guns taken away for a few weeks . It`s very common at the moment. In short, DON`T DO IT, it`s not worth it.
al4x
if its being hit hard I'd suggest a bale hide out in the field and shoot away from the road, 50 feet actually isn't very far from the centre of the road.
njc110381
I wouldn't shoot towards the road either, that's pretty risky. The hide idea is a good one if you can sort it with the farmer. I assume you're shooting birds? Can you not maybe decoy them to the ground and then get them with an air rifle? I used to get quite good bags doing that when I was a kid These situations make you realise just how useful air rifles can be!
Harnser
In my experiance over the years pigeon shooting I have always steered clear of shooting the awkward fields (near houses ,near roads ,footpaths ect ) as you will always find somebody who will object and complain about you to the local police or landowner . These fields are just not worth the hassle to shoot over . I have a number of fields like this on the farms that I shoot and my farmer friend knows that I wont shoot these fields and will put bangers on them if necessary . If you do find a way to shoot this field you wont be able to relax and enjoy the day . My advice for what is worth is to stay away .
