Banging head against a brick wall in Norfolk....

Recommended Posts

Been trying to get permissions around my area near the showground and futher afield...Done all the hints and tips on here of going round in person and asking. Taking all the paperwork with me ready but must have had about 20 No's.

Just have an air rifle so only after rabbits, pigeons and odd rat.

I have a 4x4 and insurance in place.

Can anyone on here help my along or point me in the right direction please as its getting very dis-heartened

I would suggest only having an air rifle could be an issue.

Most Farmers see pigeons, rooks/crows as their big problem on arable crops and probably don't consider an air rifle appropriate, at least the bang of a shotgun scares the birds (and the Farmer can hear it).

Why not apply for your SGC ?

just recently got into shooting thru my girlfriends mates due to moving down here from Leeds. We live with her mum till we sort a house out so cant put this address down and fix a box to the wall....and i want to make sure i am going to enjoy all aspect of shooting first before i take the plunge and buy a SGC and all the extras that entails.

All i want to do is be able to go for a walk with the dog taking my airrifle and hopefully bag a bunny or pigeon or two for the pot as I love bunny stew.

Local cattle market and some leaflets on screens could be a start. Just don't bother the farmers when bidding is on.

Golf courses for out of hours shooting. We have 2 courses near us. First one came through word of mouth. A friend plays there and mentioned it's a great course and would b better if the squirrels left. He gave my name to the head greens keeper and we got on from there on. Second one came from good word of mouth from the first one.

Have a word at your local gunstore too.

Patience and determination are the key though.

Good luck.

Did you see the head green keeper or just a club official? Normally it is the green keeper who sways it for you with the commitee. Most club officals have no idea what pests are on a course and they hear the words 'rifle or 'gun' and instantly think some rambo wants to go shooting anything and everything even though it is generally quite the opposite.

The land I shoot over boarders 3 Bowls greens I was asked by the green keepers to shoot them to rid them of rabbits, I do them with an airrifle so I dont destroy the green, worth a try, make sure you wave your Insurance under their noses, it all helps

Good Luck mate

Welcome to the wonderful world of shooting !

Seriously though , its common to have that many knock backs , are you just asking to shoot rabbits though? sometimes its better to ask if they have any rat or feral problems as these are where the airrifle excels , thats how i got my permissions and i also shoot 2 small holdings , the farm i now have permission over came about due to me clearing ferals and shooting his long tails .

I'm not saying all new shooters jump the gun but most only want the edible quarry , sometimes you have to put in a lot of hard work to get a chance at those bun buns .

Good luck .

Cranners advise is sound, you may also wish to consider that locals will already have most if not all sorted and unless farmer is unhappy with teh service he is getting the chance of getting on is slim. With an airgun i would perhaps think about marketing yourself for barn/stor room rat duties and the like where a shotgun cant go? you may need to join some clubs and go beating to make new friends and contacts thats how we all get started.. good luck

I used to live in Norwich and when I was there it took me nearly 20 years to get all the land I could shoot on,

Try Honingham Thorp Farms they are in Colton not far from you now I know they have a keeper but if you see him then he may let you go around with him to start off with, They have a couple of quarry’s dotted across there farm so it may be a good chance but i can't promise anything.

One way I got my land over Norwich way believe it or not was to go around the local Country pubs for a drink and speak to the local people as they may know someone that can help you or point you in the right direction.

spoke to Ian already who owns Honingham TF and got a very blunt no...he wont let the local landlord from the pub go on his land after I did your 2nd part of advice (even tho i drink in a few of them already)

Been round 10 farms and 4 golf courses and still no joy....send 50 letters the other day to local farmers to see if can get any that way....:huh:

Buddy, what type of dog you got?? It’s the season for beating and offering your services here can pay dividends, even if you don’t take your dog, if you can find a small syndicate comprising of a few landowners the permission can come in waves.

Next time you visit the farms ask if they run a game shoot on their land, they generally aren’t hard to find as their fields are full of pheasants. The farmer is then getting something from you before he has to give you anything.

He will then be keener to let you start off blatting a few rats in his barns to start off.

Like someone mentioned earlier, young lads might turn up with an airgun but a mature guy will be expected to own at least a shotgun, do you have any friends who has a spare space in his locker, as you can apply and keep it another address. A mate of mine applied like that with no problems.

Get yourself a cheap shotgun for £150

Good luck
