Sprinter
I've had my eye on a field of drilling since friday, but due to circumstances i couldn't get on it until today. Pigeon had been building up steadily and on Monday there were about 3-400 picking it over. When we got there today we thought we had been beaten to it but upon walking the field we put up best part of 300 from a sheltered corner out of the wind (bloody cold wind at that). Not wanting to mess with looking for flightlines we set up straight away in the spot the pigeon preferred as time was getting on. As a bonus we had the wind to our backs. I wasn't expecting to get a great deal and managed to forget to defrost the two birds for the rotary so set up with 11 full bodied deeks and 5 shells in a sort of W pattern, intention that if we got a couple we'd set up the rotary in the gap in the front of the W. They started coming in almost immediately, only problem was in with the bunches of woodies were mixed ferals, blues and very young birds. After 5 mins we had 5 on the deck. Trouble is 2 were ferals, 2 young ones and a fully grown. Cursing i set up the rotary with a good one and a young one on it. After that it went ballistic for a while. They were coming in like hell, dead birds facing the wrong way, upside down you name it but it didn't bother them at all. A quick tidy up revealed 22 additional woodies down. Replaced the plastic deeks with dead ones and put the plastic away. About this time i was joined by a mate who had heard the banging. For a start i put him in the box seat and left him to it but he was having an off day and couldn't hit a cows backside with a banjo. Eventually he clicked and got all excited when he landed a great double, only for me to dampen his fanfare when i told him i'd also had two...... but for one shot at the same time!!! 4 dead in the air for 3 shots - nice. After a while he had shot out of the carts he brought with him and sauntered off, he probably finished with a dozen for 50 pokes 4:1 but he had a lot of fun doing it and i enjoyed taking the wee. Settled down again in the hot seat i got right into it with a sucession of left and rights then iced the cake with a left left and a right, yes thats right two with one shot again . Eventually it tailed off about 4pm and then spent an hour tidying up. Eventual tally 102 woodies, 6 ferals and about 4 MIA. So 108 picked in 5 hours sport - farmer well chuffed. Carts used 248 so maybe just under 2.3:1 ish overall. All my shooting was done with a 20 gauge o/u choked skeet and 1/4 24g 7.5s in the first barrel and 28g 6s in the second. Cranfield
A good days shooting. I am shooting more and more with my Benelli 20b semi auto and really appreciate the lighter weight (6.1lbs) which is comfortable to hold for long periods and seems to get me on the birds quicker than my AL391 (7.8lbs). Like you, I am also getting clean kills with 24gm loads over decoys, but I use No5 or No6 shot.
