lord_seagrave
Well, after my rather amateurish post regarding keeping ferrets in the house, I asked Stubby if I could swing by his place in sunny Grays last weekend to observe his daughter’s house-ferrets in action. I was also quite keen to see his working ferrets as well, and glean any advice that he could impart to a bumbling townie like me. It was also handy that there was a car-boot sale down the road at Orsett, and where broken bits of bicycles go, Lady Seagrave is bound to follow. It looked like a win-win kind of day: an extra hour in bed, and the weather was set fair (if a little blustery). We weren’t disappointed - Stubby very indulgently agreed, and gave Lady Seagrave and me (together with my sister and an old pal of mine) the grand tour, both inside and out, with refreshments to hand. We got to hold [or at least, attempt to hold] a selection from Stubby’s stock as he patiently explained the various pros and cons of ferret ownership. We even learnt a bit about ferret veterinary procedures So, full marks to Stubby for being so hospitable (and patient), and hats off to his hoard of furry friends for making our day out so memorable! The official photographer (sister) was snapping away happily all the while, as well as give everything in sight a damn good sniff ( ), and here are some of the edited highlights:- ORSON THE RABBIT (quite what the ethics are of keeping rabbits and ferrets in such close proximity I don’t know, but Orson looks like he can take care of himself!) MANKY (polecat hob – apparently as a kit, his one mission in life appeared to be to get as filthy as possible) BOSTON (albino hob) NIPPER (sable hob – who as a kit was inclined to bite, but, as you can see appears to have grown out of it – even when faced with my beard, which does have a somewhat rodent-like quality to it!) FOXY (silver jill – and quite the prettiest little creature I think I’ve ever seen) FOXY, HI-HO (silver polecat jill) & VIXEN (silver jill – of which only the back end is visible) Hopefully I’ve faithfully labelled all of these (thanks Stubby ) LS
